?? ? September 30th—National Truth and Reconciliation Day—is a time for all of us to reflect on the painful history and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous peoples. While the recognition of this day as a statutory holiday was one of the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, we have to ask: how much progress has truly been made when the vast majority of these recommendations remain unfulfilled? There is an uncomfortable tension in settlers receiving paid time off while Indigenous communities continue to face land dispossession, underfunded services, and systemic inequities. Reconciliation cannot be reduced to a symbolic holiday while colonial violence persists. Instead, we must commit to action and justice in ways that go beyond the surface. At Grassriots Inc., we are trying to navigate these complexities with intention. Indigenous staff have the day off, creating space for rest, reflection, or self-determined action. For settler staff, we are taking a different approach: paying our team to attend Yellowhead Institute’s “FIRE: Truth & Land Back” training. This is not about checking a box—it’s about leaning into the hard work of education, listening, and challenging the colonial systems we continue to benefit from. The #LandBack movement reminds us that reconciliation is about much more than acknowledgment—it’s about returning land, restoring Indigenous governance, and reimagining our relationships to the land and each other. These demands are not separate from struggles for worker and union rights; in fact, they are deeply connected. The fight for justice—whether on the land or in the workplace—requires solidarity across all movements that challenge systems of oppression. As a settler leader, I recognize that there is no perfect way to navigate these contradictions. But the responsibility lies with us to act meaningfully, not just on September 30th, but every day. To other settler-led organizations, let’s challenge ourselves to move beyond performative gestures and build long-term commitments to decolonization, solidarity, and justice. ?? ? #TruthAndReconciliation #LandBack #WorkerSolidarity #Decolonization #YellowheadInstitute #Grassriots #IndigenousRights #ReconciliationInAction

"City and Caltrans staff have a certain level of technical training, but it is really the folks in the neighborhoods and school sites who are the best source of information regarding existing conditions, as well as what types of solutions and improvements will actually be of use in the community." Mario Anaya, community development director of the City of Tulare, shares in our latest Safety Story of his work to improve safety for those who walk, bike, and roll in Tulare, including with the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) program. Closing the Gap | ? Close the Gap Day serves as a poignant reminder of both the strides made in bettering the lives of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the distance yet to be travelled for true societal health and equity. Health advancements have been propelled by the leadership of those directly impacted, paving the way for governments, businesses, and society at large to foster conditions conducive to the prosperity of First Peoples. ? Young Guns, a proud Aboriginal business, underscores the imperative of bridging the gaps between Indigenous Australians and the broader population. The day underscores the need for extensive efforts and unified action from all Australians to acknowledge, respect, and cultivate a more equitable environment for the original custodians of this land. ? Young Guns is dedicated to upholding the duties entrusted by our ancestors, families, and communities, fostering learning, education, and tailored strategies to nurture thriving communities and unlock the full potential of individuals. We implore our partners, team members, and communities to set lofty standards and strive relentlessly, and each contributes to creating positive change. FHWA Central Federal Lands' #DEI team spread awareness this August to promote #inclusion in the #outdoors. They shared how #marginalized groups are affected by a lack of #access to the outdoors and provided additional resources for continuing these conversations. "At CFL, we have an amazing privilege to be able to work in and create access for the nation’s most notable lands.?Unfortunately, to some communities, enjoyment and even knowledge of the outdoors is inaccessible.?This issue has been coined as “the adventure gap” by James Edward Mills. [However] we are [now] living in the generation where these gaps are talked about, and change is encouraged!" - CFL DEI Team GREAT JOB, TEAM!!! When I think about communities impacted by hurricanes, I think of coastal communities, like Houston with Hurricane Harvey in 2017 or New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Places like #ChimneyRock, North Carolina (pictured below) wouldn't have even been on my radar for being at risk for more than a bit of rain and wind. But, this week communities in and around Western North Carolina, like Chimney Rock, were devastated by unprecedented hurricane-inflicted damage by #HurricaneHelene. In some cases, entire communities washed away with flood waters. ?? According to an article by the #BBC, there is strong evidence to support the impact of #climatechange on the development, strength, speed, and duration of tropical storms. Warmer ocean waters facilitate stronger storms. Higher atmospheric temperatures support increased capacity of storms to hold more moisture. These phenomena collectively contribute to greater rainfall totals. Stronger storms can last longer after making landfall, allowing them to travel farther inland, and greater rainfall means a greater likelihood for extreme flooding. We saw this type of flooding happen farther inland with Hurricane Helene. ?? The #UnitedNations' climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has noted a global temperature increase of just 1.5 degrees Celsius could mean 10% more tropical storms worldwide could reach category four or five. This means bigger, stronger storms that bring with them a higher likelihood of destruction, broader geographical impact, and greater risks to the health and safety of people living in the storms' path. ?? #climatechange is a global health emergency. Hurricane Helene is just one example of how extreme weather events, made more severe because of human-facilitated changes in the planet, impacts public health. ?? As impacts of climate change are more readily recognized as threats to public health, there is increased accountability for addressing it as such among public health agencies. Requirements for community resilience have been included in the #PHAB Standards and Measures for national accreditation and stronger emphasis on planning for climate-related emergencies in preparedness planning per #CDC #PHEP requirements are just two examples. As a result, there are frameworks, examples, and lessons-learned upon which communities can assess and revise their own emergency plans to be better prepared.?? Is your community prepared? ??
