His lab created MERLIN, an artificial intelligence system that learns?how people use energy in their homes?and adjust energy controls like thermostats to meet their needs while at the same time minimizing the impact on the grid. That's not all: The system can learn on one set of buildings and occupants and be used in buildings with different controls and energy use patterns. Further to my post about the need for accurate grid forecasts to feed both data centres (the power demand for AI is also detailed below) and electrification - how can you upgrade overhead 230kV powerlines while they are live? String a heavier conductor in parallel on the same tower, but carefully! ?Add in “grid enhancing technologies” like dynamic line rating sensors that tell grid operators when more power can be fed down a circuit without overheating cables/conductors/transformers as well as conventional on-load tap changers and voltage regulators. #grid #forecast #upgrade https://lnkd.in/gpaQsPMh
