NEW: While it’s true that #valentinesday is best known as a day lovebirds celebrate each other, the "day of love" is also increasingly being celebrated by non-couples, such as friends, family members and strangers in undefined pairings who are just getting acquainted. One-third of consumers plan to purchase gifts for friends this Valentine’s Day, up from 28% last year, and the highest in the survey’s history, according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey of Valentine's Day spending. Another 19% expect to purchase gifts for co-workers, up from 16% in 2024 and another record, while 32% of shoppers plan on Valentine’s Day gifts for their pets. Plus, Sweethearts candies, the most iconic Valentine’s Day sweets created in 1902, has produced 600 million sweet candy hearts for this Valentine's Day, bearing the messages “MARRY ME, “MOVE IN?" and “4EVER EVER?” Those messages aren’t just for show this year. Fear of missing out is always a powerful motivator. Reinforce that customers should order early to guarantee availability. ??People love free. Offering something free, even something really small like a premium card, is a more powerful motivator than a discount of similar value. ? If you have a loyalty/incentive program offer bonus points to customers that order early. ? Discounts hurt your profits much more than a small freebie or bonus points and should be a last resort.
