Less than 8% of board members are black women! Why are you not in the rooms where big decisions are made? A few months ago I was connected to an incredible woman, Muma Sinkala, a trailblazer in her own right. We immediately hit it off and ended up talking for over an hour!!! Part of her unique value is her board experience, and the story behind how she got into boards is quite intriguing. ?? She opened my eyes to a world I had been excluded from and opportunities I had been missing out on. I resolved that day to ensure that I do something with this knowledge for myself and other African women in STEM! For many women, the thought of serving on a board feels out of reach. For too long, the lack of information and confidence has kept us out. Ignorance is costing us influence, financial growth, and the chance to shape the future. The boardroom is not out of your reach. The opportunity is closer than you think. The question is, will you take it? The benefits of sitting on a board are undeniable. Board members can earn multiple six figures while driving change and building a network that elevates their careers. ??????With our Power Circle Masterclass: Women on Boards, you can learn how to position yourself for these opportunities. Muma Sinkala Sinkala will be delivering this masterclass! She is an executive leader fuelled by the passion to amplify the representation of black women in pivotal decision-making roles. ??The Women on Boards masterclass is just one of the incredible rewards available when you support African Women in STEM’s crowdfunding campaign. ??By contributing, you are unlocking exclusive rewards and helping to empower African women to excel in STEM and leadership! Ready to claim your seat at the table? ? Support our campaign today and take your first step toward financial freedom and career control. This is e.l.f.'ing brilliant! E.L.F. BEAUTY's research team combed through the board of directors members for each of the U.S. based company on the NYSE and NASDAQ, and the data isn't great. Turns out, most boards are comprised of a whole lot of Dicks... and Richards, and Ricks. In fact, the representation of Dicks on these boards is so pervasive that the Dicks outnumber more than a few minority groups also serving on these boards. For example, there are 19x more men named Dick than the 29 women of Middle Eastern descent on these boards, and 2x more men named Dick than there are Hispanic women on these boards. We commend E.L.F. BEAUTY for this hilarious campaign. While the subject matter is serious, this approach is a brilliant way to get us all talking about an issue that still plagues the workforce. We need more women of color in positions of leadership. Enough with all the Dicks. #TierOneSolutions #BigAgencySmart #SmallAgencyHeart? #womeninleadership #genderinequality? #ChangeTheBoardGame Cynthia Ward Lyndon Neal?
So many Dicks and so few of everyone else. Today, we are excited to unveil another chapter of our Change the Board Game movement, “So Many Dicks.” A spotlight on the lack of diversity in corporate boardrooms across the U.S. Our campaign is more than just a statement – it's a call to action for real change. We combed through each board of directors of U.S. based companies on the NYSE and NASDAQ, all 36,957 existing board members across 4,429 publicly traded U.S. companies. The data is astounding: ?? There were 566 men named Richard, Rick, or Dick (Dicks) serving on these public company boards. ?? Black women and Asian women barely outnumber men named Dick, with only 806 Black Women, 774 Asian Women. ?? There were only 283 Hispanic Women on these same boards, only half the number of “Dicks”. ?? There are 19x more men named Dick than the 29 women of Middle Eastern descent on these boards ?? There are only 3 Native American Women serving on these boards compared to 566 men named Dick. At e.l.f. Beauty, inclusivity is a superpower. With our board leading the charge with 2/3 women and 1/3 diverse members, we're setting a new standard for corporate leadership. Together, we can create a more equitable future for all. E.L.F Beauty isn't afraid to push boundaries, and their latest campaign is no exception. Here's why it's a marketing masterstroke: Tackling Boardroom Bias: Their "So Many Dicks, So Few of Everyone Else" campaign shines a light on the lack of gender diversity in corporate leadership. Bold & Inclusive Message: This campaign uses humor to spark a serious conversation about inclusivity, resonating with a broader audience. Research-Backed Action: Elf clearly understands their audience and addresses a genuine concern. Championing Women Leaders: The campaign empowers women and promotes diversity in boardrooms, a message that resonates deeply. This isn't their first venture into creative marketing. Their Mount Rushmore pimple patch campaign was another example of unconventional marketing brilliance. E.L.F Beauty is proving that innovative marketing can spark important conversations and drive positive change. Their dedication to inclusivity and their commitment to creative disruption make them one of the top brands to watch. E.L.F. BEAUTY #Greatmarketing

Diversity and inclusion are more than just buzzwords—they are vital to a thriving organization. E.L.F. Beauty’s campaign, “Changing the Board Game,” caught my attention with its bold approach. Here’s my take - ?? The attention-grabbing messaging stands out, backed by compelling data that underscores the importance of the issue. Kudos to E.L.F. Beauty for putting a specific diversity issue at the forefront! ?? It’s promising to see E.L.F. not only aiming for a diverse board but also creating opportunities for external candidates. These concrete steps demonstrate a commitment to lasting change. ?? While the campaign sparks conversation, it could benefit from a more action-oriented call-to-action. I would've liked to see follow-up initiatives that guide other organizations on implementing concrete steps for a more diverse board or for individuals to get themselves board-ready. What do you think of the campaign’s approach? How can we push for more actionable outcomes in our own organizations? #DEIB #BoardDiversity #Leadership

The Colour of Power: What Happens When We Are Not in the Room? Why Black Women—and Their Organisations—Need to Be at the Women in the Shade Conference Did you know Black women make up less than 2% of leadership roles in industries and sectors critical to shaping our world? When Black women are absent from decision-making spaces, the loss is monumental—not only for them but for organisations, communities, and society. Black Women Leading with Purpose When Black women rise to positions of influence, they bring perspectives that enrich discussions and drive transformative change. Leaders like Kamala Harris and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala are proof of the innovation and inclusivity that diverse leadership fosters. Their leadership reminds us: the absence of Black women in boardrooms, politics, and senior management is a missed opportunity we can no longer afford. Elevating Voices in Uniformed Services The same is true in uniformed services. Black women in these roles not only ensure better representation but also foster trust and cultural understanding between organizations and the communities they serve. Yet, Black women remain underrepresented. The Women In The Shade Conference, happening on January 16th, 2025, is a groundbreaking event designed to change that narrative. Why You Need to Be in the Room This conference is more than just an event—it’s a movement. It’s a call for organisations to support their Black female employees and for individuals to rise into the leadership roles they deserve. By attending, you will: Empower Black women with tools to lead confidently and authentically. Gain insights into the unique challenges and opportunities for Black women in leadership. Signal your organisation’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Call for Change Let’s stop re-enforcing systemic inequities and start amplifying Black voices. Book your place at the Women in the Shade Conference now or sponsor a delegate to attend. Early bird tickets are available until December 15th, 2024. Don’t miss this opportunity to invest in the future of your organisation and the incredible Black women who will lead it. For more information or to secure your spot, contact [email protected] Together, let’s ensure Black women are not just in the room—they’re leading it. #WomenInTheShade #BlackWomenLeadership #RepresentationMatters #EmpowerBlackWomen
