NEWS: Construction Underway for Michigan State University + Henry Ford Health Biomedical Research Center -- Michigan State University (MSU) and Henry Ford Health have joined forces to construct the?$335 million Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Research Center, which will house 84 principal investigators and their research teams focused on cancer, neuroscience, infectious diseases, immunology, and public health. The first floor will accommodate a large core lab including an imaging suite. An entire floor will be dedicated to the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute. At 335,000 sf and seven stories, it will be will be MSU’s largest research facility. As part of a 30-year partnership begun in 2021, the center will be owned by MSU on land leased from Henry Ford Health, and operated jointly by both institutions. The venture is part of a $3 billion development group that includes the Detroit Pistons basketball organization. The “Future of Health” project will feature a new hospital tower and 600 units of mixed-income housing. Thrilled to share my very first research paper with the world!??? ?? Incredibly proud of this collaborative effort in which we show that: 1. CHIT1 in the CSF at diagnostic LP is a robust predictor of disability progression in MS 2. CHIT1 is expressed in actively demyelinating MS lesions, both in early and late stage MS 3. CHIT1 reflects early microglial activation and involvement in these lesions ? Now further work is needed to confirm the potential of CHIT1 to aid MS clinicians in early patient stratification and therapy selection! ?? Today I cycled around the Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park. It's a beautiful and pleasant place. The Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park is located near the Hsinchu High Speed Rail Station, and since it is close to where I live, I sometimes go for a walk there to check on the progress. Since the concept was announced by the Taiwanese government in 2005, the science park has been steadily built over the past 20 years. As expected, Taiwan has built the science park based on a grand design (business model) based on a long-term vision, and the industry has also developed. On a site of 38.3 km2, six research bases have been set up, including a hadron cancer treatment center, cancer medicine, vascular cardiology, clinical genomics, clinical regenerative medicine, clinical photoelectron medicine, and medical imaging, making it a base for medical research and development industrialization in Asia. The National Taiwan University Hospital is at the core of this science park, and the joint venture between National Taiwan University and private companies is at the center of the science park, which is based on collaboration by establishing research and development bases and attracting companies. Recently, people from all over the world have been gathering, and construction of many elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools has begun, and it is steadily developing. Taiwan's greatness is that it proceeds with things based on a grand design (business model) based on a long-term vision. That is why Taiwan has been able to accumulate technologies that the world cannot imitate, and Taiwan increase the value of the country. I feel excited every day. It is completely different from some countries that only think about short-term economic effects.

We’re sharing this one on LinkedIn too as we think it is a really beautiful example of research that meaningfully sought to involve people throughout the entire research cycle of a PhD project, and how they did it + learnings at every step. There are a lot of guidances about how to involve people in research, and this is a great demonstration of taking a guidance, thinking about how to do it for your specific project, then documenting and reporting on what was done. There is no one-sized fits all approach for all research. But, there is a common mindset needed to want to do it, to be open and compassionate, and to welcome other voices in. Successful young scientists at the Faculty of Medicine ?? On the way to becoming a medical doctor, the focus is more on clinical than scientific work. But we also need young doctors to put their ideas and knowledge into medical research. That’s why the National MD-PhD Grants Program of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) enables particularly talented young physicians interested in research to complete doctoral research training. The SAMS and the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF, with the support of private foundations and in collaboration with the Swiss School of Public Health, award each year a limited number of competitive individual MD-PhD grants. We are very proud that three young researchers from our Faculty are among this year's awardees, and we congratulate them warmly. ?? ?? Rahel Ottersberg will explore the boundaries of ex-vivo heart perfusion, a technology expected to have significant benefits in heart transplantation. ?? Luca Palombella will investigate the role of TRAF2 and NCK-interacting kinase in the regulation of acute myeloid leukemia, the most common form of leukemia in adults. ?? The bench work, the class work, the publications, the conferences. It’s easy to tunnel-vision on how these steps will advance your career. But long-term, these achievements aren’t to help just you, but to help the patients that need you. I was fortunate to spend this past week shadowing Dr. Richard Ambinder (my PI) and the fantastic NPs, PAs, social workers and nurses of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center Bone Marrow Transplant and CAR-T service. At the Johns Hopkins Medicine Pathobiology PhD program, we have the opportunity to complete translational rotations, with the goal of teaching the graduate students how our research impacts the patients, as well as the challenges the patients and physicians face together throughout treatment. It was an illuminating experience. I saw patients from all walks of life at different treatment stages. I learned about diseases I’d never even heard of throughout 10 years of scientific research. Some patients have complex treatment plans. Others are able to leave the hospital the next day. Others still slowly deteriorate before your eyes despite the team’s best efforts and focused care. You meet the patients, meet their families, and see treatment through their eyes as well. You see hope, and you see heartache. Observing the patients and care team fight together to reach stable recovery was inspiring, and reminded me once again that the ultimate goal with what we, as scientists, do, isn’t to publish a paper or secure grants, but to help the vulnerable and sick overcome adversity. I would encourage anyone who works in biomedical research to understand the clinical side of your disease of interest. We’re all part of one larger force of change with the potential to help many people. To help just one person, well that’s a success to me. #oncology #pathology #patientsfirst

Interesting recent publication led by Victor Konstantin Schweiger and Christian Templin in the European Heart Journal co-authored by David Niederseer of Hochgebirgsklinik Davos. ? ?? Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is characterized by transient left ventricular wall motion anomalies associated with coronary microvascular dysfunction in the absence of culprit lesions of epicardial coronary arteries. The clinical presentation of TTS resembles that of typical acute coronary syndrome (#ACS). Despite coronary angiography being the gold standard for TTS diagnosis, its limitations and unessential role in disease management necessitate non-invasive diagnostic methods. Patients with TTS exhibit distinctive patterns of classic cardiac biomarkers compared to patients with ACS. Specifically, TTS is associated with higher brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels attributed to heightened filling pressures, and conversely, lower levels of troponin or creatine kinase (CK), as a consequence of distinct pathophysiological mechanisms. These variations in biomarker levels have been proposed as valuable indicators in differentiating these two entities from another. However, although previously proposed ratios of classic cardiac biomarkers exhibit promise in distinguishing TTS from ACS, their applicability was restricted by small sample sizes and a lack of validation. Thus, the present study aimed to validate these ratios in the largest database dedicated to TTS worldwide, the International Takotsubo (InterTAK) Registry. ? The total study cohort consisted of 1060 patients with TTS and 2435 all-comer patients with either ST-elevation myocardial infarction (49.2%) or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (50.8%).
