I've audited hundreds of ecomm sites, and the biggest problem I see is: Sites not optimised for how people shop Sounds obvious doesn't it... [Insert clickbait comments]. But when I ask if any customer research has been performed, 90% of the time the answer is NO. It's easy to spot a site that hasn't put in the effort, e.g. - Electronics sites that hide technical specs on PLP. - Health & Beauty sites that don't highlight benefits. - Sites that sell visual products with crap images. Understand how people shop. Ensure your site matches. Simples. Understanding your customers doesn't take long. And it's not expensive. You can get amazing insights with the following: 1. Check Analytics and Heatmaps - Set up events on filters and sorting - Install Microsoft Clarity - Check which filters and sorting options are most popular - Does it differ per category? - What can that tell you about your customers? 2. Run post-purchase surveys - Ask "what are you looking forward to most about [item]?" - Ask "How did you decide on [item] today?" 3. Survey your database - Segment purchasers vs. non-purchasers. - Ask purchasers what, why, and how they purchased. - Ask non-purchasers why they haven’t bought yet. - Ask both segments for suggestions and improvements. 4. User test with ideal customers: - Recruit from your database. - Compare purchasers vs. non-purchasers. - Watch them go through your website. - Note down the issues.
