This article sheds an interesting light on athlete compensation. Dollar for dollar, their exposure to tax on their income is high compared to other ultra-high earners. C-Suite executives have found ways to defer a good bit of taxes from their compensation through payments as stock and deferred compensation plans where their salary is “relatively” low. Other high earners have used getting paid as a contractor and having it go to an LLC as a way to use different write-offs and other strategies to lower taxable income and for deferral. Professional athletes don’t seem to have the options others do. It’s good to see someone pushing the envelope. Imagine if professional athletes were looked at as business owners or contractors instead of employees where teams own their ability to do their job.
