We're excited to be working with the City of Westerville on the modernization of their City Hall Municipal Complex, a project close to our hearts as we revisit and enhance a building MA originally designed nearly 40 years ago. The goal is to unify the City’s administrative functions within a single, modernized campus that will serve the community efficiently for decades. Through visioning sessions and user interviews that informed our design, we crafted spaces that promote economic development, centralize customer service, and embody the Westerville brand. Public spaces can enhance city living dramatically. When utilised correctly public spaces can become escapes from the busy and noisy urban environment. In this week's blog, we've reviewed a few case studies that have enhanced the city experience by creating areas to escape. https://lnkd.in/ePCCUgeb

As a city embarking on densification, what have we learned from the past? Here is a great video of how Amsterdam answered this, in their case achieved through careful planning and control, and curated local styles. They are not only solving for new housing but also for the mistakes of previous eras, including the modern mass market. The pattern book in NSW could be a game changer - not only by inviting good design in buildings, but also by allowing for areas to curate the patterns that reflect their local flavour, and give their residents a degree of control of how density occurs. Something we could learn from in NSW? https://lnkd.in/gjQTC4cn Elizabeth Farrelly Paul Scully

?? NEW from C40’s Urban Planning and Design team ?? C40 has released new guidance for cities to improve their public spaces. Public spaces should be places for everyone, they should be adaptable and most importantly, centred around people. Yet often, their potential is not reflected in how they are designed. Parks, playgrounds, plazas and waterfronts bring communities together and are integral to our lives, livelihoods and happiness. Practical, local actions are outlined in the guide, that allow cities to engage meaningfully with local communities. Read the guide and transform your city: https://c40.me/3QJSHgb

How do we reframe the design of cities to support sustainable and culturally-connected housing alternatives? Join us at UM tomorrow night to join the conversation.
Please join us for the third U-SoA Spring Term Salon of the year, featuring a distinguished panel of speakers who will engage in a thought-provoking discussion on the topic: "How do we reframe the design of cities to support sustainable and culturally-connected housing alternatives?” This Salon forms part of a comprehensive 5-part series entitled "In Short Supply: Affordable Housing," which is jointly organized by the University of Miami School of Architecture and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD – Southeast Region). Salons will take place every Thursday evening, from 6pm-8pm, throughout the month of February, with the 45-minute panel discussion beginning at 6:30pm. In this week's session, we will delve into questions of urban and neighborhood design, regulations, data, incentivizing the creation of affordable housing, the preservation of culture, and more. We encourage you to actively participate in this enriching forum by posing questions, engaging in valuable discussions, and remaining for a convivial happy hour, during which further conversations on this critical theme can take place.

The new approach to this so called "URBAN PLANNING" should be to DECENTRALIZE, go back to living simple, living in communities, sharing resources, sharing traditional wisdom and knowledge. Because THAT is the ONLY WAY TO SAVE THIS PLANET and the WESTERN WORLD needs to let go of this dependence on materialism and encourage Western city dwellers to do the same as what most non western communities are doing. SAVE THE WORLD. GO BACK TO TRADITION, CULTURE, NATURE !

Did you know today is Parking Day? Some of you maybe wondering what exactly is Parking Day. Well let me explain. PARK(ing) Day fosters social interaction, civic engagement, critical thinking, and creativity through community participation and play. Each year on the third Friday of September, cities worldwide partake in transforming parking spaces into vibrant parks. Local residents, organizations, and businesses collaborate to create inviting spaces for relaxation, networking, and entertainment. This annual event turns any downtown into a living urban laboratory, showcasing innovative ideas and featuring performances from local artists. Why I believe PARK(ing) Day is so very Important in todays world. 1. Community Building: It encourages residents to connect, fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit. 2. Reimagining Urban Spaces: It challenges conventional uses of public space, promoting innovative solutions for urban design. 3. Civic Engagement: By involving diverse groups, it empowers citizens to express their ideas and advocate for change in their neighborhoods. 4. Environmental Awareness: It highlights the need for green spaces in urban areas, encouraging sustainable practices and enhancing city livability. After almost 3 decades of collaborating with landscape architects and urban planners, I've concluded that landscape architecture is vital to the future of humanity. This profession inspires me so and attracts critical thinkers who intricately weave community, culture, creativity, and sustainability and soul into every aspect of their designs and lives. I am incredibly proud that our teams have the opportunity to work with some of the nation's leading landscape architects right here in Texas, alongside our SPEKtacular manufacturers such as mmcité usa and @hausersite @edsconcrete @outsider @idsculpture. For all those who celebrated Parking Day today, let’s keep building stronger connections and communities together! Share your Parking Day pictures and tell my why it’s so important to you. Together we can make our cities Spektacular, and let’s keep being the SPEK that Makes a Difference. #lightspek #sitespek #standupforyourspek #spekthatmakesadifference #parkingday #nationalasla #texasasla #getoutside #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #bellandmccoy #frm #lighting

??New ideas need old buildings??? At the recent Malm? Real Estate Research Conference, we looked at how cities change. In the closing session, we particularly focussed on the role of old, existing buildings and their potential to enrich cultural life. An example from Malm?: Lokstallarna (The locomotive stables) in the Malm? district of Kirseberg. Lokstallarna, as an old building, has a rich history: Built in 1914, it has changed from being Sweden’s largest workshop and a big employer to needing to be used in a different way. The concept that new ideas can emerge from old buildings, encapsulated in the leading phrase "new ideas need old buildings," demonstrates the potential for Lokstallarna to be utilized in novel ways, such as a venue for new residences, businesses, and diverse events. Central to the discussions was the aim of creating vibrant urban environments by integrating cultural vitality with urban development. Key takeaways from the closing session:? - Tailored solutions and early stakeholder engagement are vital for effectively balancing preservation with adaptation.? - Urban transformation has an iterative nature, which is particularly important to embrace when it comes to industrial spaces and their physical structures and land use considerations. - In order to create real value, spaces must be activated: When spaces are occupied, it translates into community enrichment. Only used spaces help communities! - In order to create real value, spaces must be activated: When spaces are occupied, it translates into community enrichment. Only used spaces help communities! The session concluded with a lively discussion facilitated by the moderator, who posed questions to the panel to encourage a dynamic exchange of ideas, contributing to the exploration of the fascinating intersection of culture and urban development. As partners to the research school ASSURE (Adaptation of urban Space through SUstainable REgeneration), we remain committed to advancing research and fostering collaborative efforts to shape inclusive, vibrant urban environments. Let's continue this conversation and drive positive change together. #UrbanDevelopment #SustainableRegeneration #Malm?University #ASSURE
