"Through the use of PIP, students are now getting a very real experience of testing the plasticity of metals. Being able to take the theory and academic concepts that they are seeing in lectures and then applying them to a real-world sample has been a real advantage." Dr?Rob Thompson, Teaching Fellow at the?University of Cambridge. Watch as Dr Rob Thompson, materials science educator at the University of Cambridge, and his student Kevin Zetai Xu, chat about how practicals are aiding comprehension of mechanical deformation. For these practicals, Rob and his team have been using Plastometrex’s PIP technology (Profilometry-based Indentation Plastometry) as it allows him to get students up and running quickly to do their own tests on real materials. A PIP test takes less than five minutes, generates instant results, and, in Rob's words, is "astonishingly simple" to use. One of the highlights of the past few days was definitely the opportunity to physically experience and assemble the products and innovations at our newly remodelled IMPS (igus motion plastics show) in order to get a better feel for our motion plastics. ?? Thanks to the hands-on mentality of our training, I think the approach of organising the workshop in an open university style was a complete success. ?? It was also interesting to learn from our international colleagues about the problems of their local customers with regard to applications and products. This enabled us to develop some new strategies together, which we will implement as problem-solving approaches in the future. ?? Starting a PhD gave Sabrine the opportunity to dive deeper into one subject and become an expert in it - something she was gladly imagining at the start. Now she is working on significant research for the aerospace and automotive industry, as part of NWO (Dutch Research Council)'s Enlighten programme. Thermoplastic composites, or fiber-reinforced polymers, are already used to create lightweight and strong parts in aerospace and automotive structures. However, the material needs to be advanced in order to make larger constructions with it, saving more weight and CO2 emissions. Developing such large-scale thermoplastic composite structures that are both reliable and efficient is the primary aim in the Enlighten programme. Within this initiative works a multidisciplinary team of 13 researchers, one of which is Sabrine. “???? ???????? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ?????????????????? ???? ????????, ?????? ??????????????, ?????? ??????????. ???? ???? ???????? ???? ???????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ?????????????????? ?????? ????????, ?????????????????????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????? ?? ????????????”. It explains the underlying principles of polymer science: the properties that are important to injection molding and their application to molding process development. The effects of polymer morphology, thermal transitions, drying, and rheology on the injection molding process are explained in detail. The development of a robust molding process is broken down into two sections: the Cosmetic Process and the Dimensional Process. Scientific molding procedures to establish a 3R process are provided. The concept of Design of Experiments (DOEs) for and in injection molding is explained, giving insight into the cosmetic and dimensional process windows. A plan to release qualified molds into production with troubleshooting tips is also provided. Topics that impact a robust process such as the use of regrind, mold cooling, and venting are also described. Readers will be able to utilize the knowledge gained from the book in their day-to-day operations immediately. This third edition includes a completely new subchapter covering melt preparation, as well as much additional, revised, and updated material throughout the book. HOW CAN WE IMPROVE MANUAL ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS FOR BETTER GEOMETRIC QUALITY? ? ??? Utilizing the IMMA manikin, Wingquist Laboratory's research project AMIGO wanted to determine the level of complexity for manual assembly operations. The project's intention was to translate traditionally qualitative aspects into measurable parameters, to proactively integrate them into new products and systems. ? ?? By bridging two research tracks, the project developed an analytical framework to simulate and forecast a system solution considering both product quality and operator conditions. The aim was to create new and improved tools and working methods for geometry assurance and production engineers, to predict assembly-related quality risks during the early stages of product development. ? ?? Moving part of the focus on assembly solutions and process design from preparation to conceptualization stages accelerates the product development timeline. Additionally, there is potential for significant reduction in human, environmental and financial resource waste. ? ??
