The Architects in Schools (AIS) program, a cornerstone initiative by AIA Chicago Foundation Board , just wrapped up another successful cycle, Fall 2024. The program, which brings architecture professionals into classrooms, continues to highlight the importance of fostering #creativity, #problemsolving, and #spatialawareness among young learners. This year we enjoyed the hospitality of Chicago Public Schools Whittier Dual Language Academy and Daniel R Cameron Public School. Huge shout out to Cristian Andres Yugsi Diaz who went over and beyond the call of duty as Lead Mentor at Whittier. Here at design group JEDI Incorporated, we are grateful to be amongst this cohort of individuals and firms who truly invest in shaping young minds for tomorrow. The Mission of AIS AIS serves as a bridge between the architectural community and the educational sphere, aiming to inspire students by teaching them about the built environment. It’s not just about architecture; it’s about #empoweringstudents to think critically about #design, #sustainability, and the spaces they inhabit daily. Key Highlights from This Year’s Program Engagement: Architects collaborated with educators to deliver hands-on lessons in design and planning, emphasizing the relevance of architecture to community and individual well-being. Creativity in Action: Students worked on design projects, learning about the fundamentals of architecture while solving real-world problems. ? Impact: Participants gained insights into architecture as a career and how design shapes the world around us, sparking interest in STEAM (#Science, #Technology, #Engineering, #Arts, and #Math) fields. The Value of the Program For architects, AIS is more than an outreach program—it’s a chance to give back and share the values of their profession. For students, it’s an opportunity to see how they can influence their communities and explore pathways in design and architecture. Looking Ahead As the program concludes, its success underscores the importance of such initiatives in shaping future generations of thinkers and doers. It’s a reminder that architecture isn't just about buildings—it's about people, ideas, and the future.

Welcome to the School Design Study Group at Cambridge University! We are a community of school design enthusiasts united by a shared belief in the transformative power of well-designed learning environments. Based at Cambridge University, our group brings together a diverse mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members from the Department of Architecture and the Faculty of Education, as well as individuals from beyond these disciplines. In this space, we create opportunities for educationalists, spatial practitioners, and academics to connect and engage in meaningful dialogue. We aim to explore and expand ideas on how the built environment shapes the learning experience. Together, we delve into pressing questions such as: How do spatial design and pedagogy intersect? What makes a school building conducive to holistic learning? Our interdisciplinary community comes alive through: - Discussions with leading voices in the field—architects, educators, design anthropologists, and activists. - Visits to inspiring local schools that exemplify innovative design. - Design charettes that bring together architects and educators to generate new ideas for the future of school design. If you're passionate about reimagining educational spaces or simply curious to learn more, we’d love to connect with you! Follow us for insights, events, and conversations on what makes a school space truly impactful. Let’s reshape the future of learning environments—one discussion at a time. #SchoolDesign #CambridgeUniversity #LearningEnvironments #EducationalSpaces #Architecture #InterdisciplinaryResearch

An individual’s learning experience is not only shaped by what they learn but also by where they learn it. Effective school design goes beyond fulfilling functional needs; it creates dynamic environments that align with the curriculum, fostering interaction, creativity, and a holistic approach to education. When these elements work in harmony, they fully engage students in their learning journey, blending structured education with spaces that inspire exploration and community-building. At Vijay Gupta Architects (VGA) we believe that striking the right balance using spatial planning as a tool, can make all the difference. #architecture #institution #education #design #campusdesign #university #designthinking #planning

?? **Rethinking Architectural Education: Bridging the Gap to Real-World Practice** ??? As architects, we understand that our profession is a unique blend of aesthetics, science, and mechanics. However, many recent graduates feel unprepared for the realities of working in the field, often describing their education as falling short in equipping them with practical skills. **Why the Disconnect?** 1. **Theory vs. Practice**: While theoretical knowledge is essential, it's the hands-on experience that truly prepares students for the complexities of architectural practice. 2. **Lack of Real Projects**: Engaging students with real-world projects under the guidance of experienced professionals can provide invaluable insights that textbooks simply cannot. 3. **Collaboration and Mentorship**: Working on live projects encourages collaboration and allows students to learn directly from industry experts, fostering a deeper understanding of the profession. **A Call to Action for Architectural Education** It’s time for educational institutions to listen to the voices of graduates and adapt their curricula to better meet the demands of the industry. By integrating more practical, project-based learning, we can ensure that students are not just surviving but thriving in their careers. Hands-on experience should be a cornerstone of architectural education, preparing students not only to design beautiful structures but also to navigate the challenges of the business side of architecture. Let’s advocate for an education system that truly prepares future architects for the dynamic and rewarding journey that lies ahead. What changes do you think are needed in architectural education to better prepare students for the real world? #ArchitectureEducation #RealWorldExperience #ArchitecturalPractice #EducationReform #FutureArchitects

Watching the final reviews of architecture students recently really got me thinking. The pressure to be perfect is overwhelming and it's taking a toll on their health and creativity. I believe we need to ease up on this perfectionism. If we allow more room for creativity and learning from mistakes, I think we'd see happier, more resilient students. Let's consider a gentler approach that prepares them for the real world in a supportive way. #ArchitectureEducation #StudentWellbeing #CreativeLearning

Mentorship can be inspiring and life-changing — both for the mentee and mentor. Slingshot Architect Nolan Sullivan serves as a volunteer mentor for the ACE Mentor Program of America, which connects high school students with professionals in the architecture, construction, and engineering fields. “I hope that I am able to spread my passion for architecture with students and excite them about pursuing a career in this field,” Nolan says. Students in the ACE program form teams that emulate an actual design team. Together with their mentors, students work through a mock design project. Recently, Nolan accompanied the student team on a visit to their project site. They documented existing conditions and context. Next, mentors will support the students through the design process. “By sharing our experience and expertise we can help students build the skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in an architecture, construction, or engineering field,” Nolan says. More than 12,000 students have been mentored by 5,000 mentors through ACE, with $37 million in scholarships awarded to students entering the field. Thanks to Nolan and all ACE mentors for inspiring the next generation of professionals and creative visionaries! Whether it’s reimagining public spaces or designing sustainable cities, these students are the future of how we live, work, and play. #SlingshotArchitecture #Slingers #Slingshot #IowaArchitecture #Architecture #AIAIowa #IowaArchitect #AceMentor

Exploring Theory Through Interaction and Creativity ? In our latest exercise at CTES College of Architecture, students ventured beyond textbooks and essays to truly engage with Architectural Theory. Working in groups, they explored the foundational philosophies of iconic architects, picking up on their quotes, significant works, and design principles. But here’s where it got interesting—they had to present their findings by designing games or any other interactive medium. The goal? To transform theoretical knowledge into something lively and relatable, something that can resonate and be carried across batches and semesters. By bringing an element of play and hands-on creativity into their learning, students didn't just memorize concepts—they internalized and re-imagined them. Its an attempt to gauge if exercises like these go beyond the traditional approach to theory and take a step towards experiencing, connecting, and creating. #ArchitecturalTheory #LearningByDoing #InteractiveLearning #DesignEducation #ArchitectureAcademia #Interdisciplinary #TheoryandDesign #DesignTheory #Interactive #Storeytelling

Did you see the recent series of articles on ArchitectureAu about possible changes to architectural education? It was a really insightful set of five perspectives - from seasoned archi-educators and a current student - about what's currently lacking and what might need to change in future, as architects are called upon to respond to more and more known and unknown challenges. I especially liked the suggestion put forward by Melonie Bayl-Smith LFRAIA AFHEA MAICD about the need for foundational teaching about the business of architecture, to address patchy management skills and strategic leadership. She links these issues to salaries and money flows, and states that: "All stakeholders in architectural education must prioritise supporting a thorough and urgent revision of the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects so that references to business and practice management are made explicit." And I wholeheartedly agree with her. You can read Mel's article here... https://lnkd.in/gh394g5V ... and there are links at the bottom to the other four articles in the series. #architecture #architects #businessofarchitecture #architecturepractice
