Deferred Design By Seth Duncan Designating “Trusses by Others” on your building plans may sound trivial, but, all too often, the process for obtaining them is not. Those “others” who design and manufacture trusses from construction documents were asked what advice they would give to the building designers that create them. Everyone involved wants trusses with sufficient performance that are cost-effective, and they want a painless process for defining their requirements. Answering as many of their questions up-front as possible, along with ones they may not think to ask, is the best way to ensure you get truss designs that work without endangering your project’s timeline. The floor plan or layout of your design is the foundation of your design. A successful design and project is worth the effort, and design fees are often less than 5% of the overall project cost. Making changes once the drawings and documentation commence or permits have been obtained will cost far more than a few extra hours of design time/fees. Invest in this stage. Think it through.

I was dragged kicking and screaming into their Plan-Build process when I first started with Heavy. Coming from many years in the traditional construction world of exterior building envelope, I had become accustomed to the established process: competitive tendering in response to pre-established scope/design/material specification/schedule/budgets. As a sales professional, this process was easy for me to understand: identify future opportunities - wait for tender - work with my team to propose best value - submit. This worked well for curtain wall, cladding and other traditional trades. Unique placemaking pieces and custom architectural features require an entirely different approach. Never-been-done-before creative projects tend to come with a lot of surprises once you get into the details. Obviously Design-Assist isn’t new, but it generally starts after substantially developed concepts and designs have been generated. Conversely, in Heavy’s world, we are often responding to a client’s desire to create something "cool", often with only a theme, timeline and rough budget. I have come to appreciate that, in our space, Heavy’s Plan—Build process just makes sense. Instead of reacting to pre-determined factors, we work with clients before the bid process to think through the project. We figure out why they’re building this feature, help identify and strategize on important considerations (time, materials, money), and then collaboratively deliver detailed schematics to arrive at the best possible solutions to creatively express their vision while working within their very real constraints. The added bonus being that, with this developed intimate knowledge of the project, it’s much easier for us to subsequently fabricate and install. As you can imagine, this makes immediate sales gratification much harder to achieve. Goodbye to instant results. It takes a long-term, cooperative relationship to build truly unique features. While we still do bid on projects, we’ve seen firsthand how much smoother the process is and how much better the results are when we’re able to engage early and provide our expertise. I have left my comfortable world of familiarity behind, and I’m now able to see the real benefits Heavy’s Plan-Build process provides for all involved. So, if you know of a project in need of a unique “special something” - let’s chat! #Placemaking #ArchitecturalArt #DesignBuild #CreativeFeatures

Please your Reviews and corrections are needed., Thanks. Scenario: A building has 1000 floors. Each floor is accessible with a single elevator that can carry 20 people at a time. How do you design an interface for the elevator, considering the different people and their needs, Also, considering that the elevator doesn't stop to go down while going up until it gets to the last floor. Your Task: Design an interface for this elevator, Deliverables are up to you. However, either low fidelity or hi-fi design will be important to back up your process.

In this video, I explained why you should buy lighting fixtures with a higher Color Rendering Index (CRI) For visual clarity and accuracy, High CRI lighting ensures that colors appear true to life. This is especially important in settings like art galleries, retail stores, and hospitals where accurate color perception matters. When colors are rendered faithfully, people can work more efficiently and feel better overall. Why not check out our Philips Lighting? https://lnkd.in/d8n4bf_3
Today we discussed in summary what the Color Rendering Index (CRI) is and the importance of looking up for a light source with a higher CRI when making a purchase. Some manufacturers do not specify the Color Rendering Index of their lighting fittings because they know that if you understand it, you will not buy their brand. #interiordesign #Architects #Engineers #Builders

The concept of incorporating timber in construction is appealing to many, whether for a small home or a 50-storey office tower. However, despite the numerous inherent advantages of timber, the development process can be hindered by unexpectedly high cost estimates. Various factors influence a project's total cost, but one of the most crucial is the implementation of an efficient structural system in the design. Besides cost efficiency, well-designed timber structural systems can greatly enhance the aesthetics and ambiance of a space. This aspect is crucial for any design and provides valuable insights for designers and cost consultants alike. Embracing the Imperfect - Part 2 "The master craftsman knows every tool, but sometimes it's the untried chisel that carves the finest detail." Over the years, we've designed and detailed over the proverbial 10,000 doors for ultra-high-end projects, each creation more extravagant than the last. Yet, upon closer inspection, they often appear as permutations of past designs. Since co-founding our startup last year, we've shifted our focus to smaller-scale projects, involving existing buildings, luxury retail, and residences with different budgets and timelines. This transition has opened up incredible opportunities for innovation and instant-feedback. In ultra-high-end residences, the design refinement process can be quite technical, bulky, and risk-averse, relying heavily on precedents and computer-generated imagery, followed by highly calibrated detailing to bring the vision to life. As we gain more skill and experience, the execution process becomes more automatic, leaving less room for truly innovative solutions. However, when faced with a project that presented unique budgetary, schedule, and existing conditions challenges, we were forced to improvise, building the design ourselves. Instead of relying on fine materiality and workmanship, we shifted our mindset to "Embrace the Imperfect." We believe that design should: 1. Have a strong concept. 2. Feel intentional. 3. Be appropriate to history, context, and location. 4. Reflect the process of its making. 5. Create joyful experiences. Of all the design details we have created over the years, this design is one of the most satisfying. By embracing failure and adopting a vastly different design approach, we may have taken the first step in a ten-thousand-mile journey yet to come. Stay tuned for Part 3. We hope this post contributes to you finding your joy. Follow us for more insights into the world of high-design practices.

Spiral staircases offer a space-saving and visually striking solution for residential and commercial spaces. However, designing one requires careful consideration of dimensions, layout, and safety regulations. Accurate measurements are crucial, including floor-to-floor height and staircase diameter. Professional designers utilize CAD software to visualize the staircase within the intended space, ensuring a seamless fit. 'Safety is paramount,' notes John Doe, lead architect at @xyz_architects. Spiral staircases must comply with building codes, ensuring proper step height, handrail clearance, and minimal gaps to prevent accidents. Beyond functionality, these staircases serve as architectural focal points, blending aesthetics with practicality. Designers balance style and space constraints, selecting materials like wood or metal to complement the building's aesthetics. Technological advancements like 3D modeling, laser cutting, and modular components have streamlined the design and installation processes, enabling customized solutions. When planned meticulously, spiral staircases not only optimize space but also enhance a property's appeal and value. Consulting experienced professionals is key to navigating design complexities and regulatory compliance. #SpiralStaircaseDesign #SpaceSavingArchitecture #SafetyFirst #CustomDesign @staircase_experts
