Manchester United being at the top gives off a very "Dallas Cowboys" vibe, doesn't it? I did a little number crunching on this data, and here's an interesting tidbit: MLS teams got a valuation multiple of almost 10 to 1. The rest of the top 50 got an average of 4.4 to 1. Red Bull is investing into Leeds United FC... The company isn't just becoming a sponsor of Leeds United, but also an equity owner of the team. Most business relationships between companies and sports teams are transactional. A company makes the decision to become a multi-year sponsor, but the activation of that partnership might begin and end with just throwing a company logo on a team's jersey. But not with Red Bull. As one of the world's most innovative companies in marketing and content, Red Bull also owns several football teams and sports properties. Teams like the New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg, and Formula 1's Red Bull Racing make up a growing sports entertainment conglomerate owned by an energy drink brand. Investing in Leeds United is Red Bull's first move into English football. Leeds narrowly missed out on getting promoted to the Premier League but are still poised to lead the second division Championship league next season. New money from Red Bull helps give Leeds more firepower and a decent chance at future promotion to the Premier League makes this a good investment for Red Bull. However, with both club and brand seeing fantastic growth across the board, an early extension has been agreed. These new terms cover the next six-years, taking the partnership to 2030 (10 years). This will represent the current longest kit partner agreement in Super League. How many times do you see a club actively looking to agree a partnership extension, 2-years out from the renewal date of the incumbent contract? It's a rarity nowadays. This should tell you everything you need to know about OXEN's trajectory at the minute. You hear far more around clubs, well within their rights, looking to terminate contracts early due to quality concerns, or operational challenges with the delivery of the partnership. This is an eye-opening report from Sportico. The biggest thing that caught my eye: "Of the top 50 clubs in Sportico’s rankings, MLS clubs account for 40%. The most by any single league in the world. More than double that of the Premier League. Five of the MLS clubs are in the top 20, and four have valuations exceeding $1B. No club has achieved in Sportico’s previous valuation rankings." This is hard for me to get my head around. The MLS clubs have high value, but the quality of soccer is still well below the European leagues. And big stars are not playing in the MLS in their prime years.
