#New: Families looking for licensed #childcare in BC can no longer be charged a waitlist fee. ~5% of providers were charging waitlist fees usually ranging from $25-200. Considering most families join several waitlists, costs were often substantial. Per the Ministry of Education and Childcare, more than 15,000 spaces are now in the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program and more than 128,000 families are saving up to $900/month/child via the fee-reduction program. #bcpoli https://lnkd.in/gsmjw6kt

Donald Trump was asked today if he would commit to prioritizing legislation to make childcare affordable, and if so, what specific legislation he would advance. This is an unedited transcript of his response: Well, I would do that, and we're sitting down, and I was, somebody, we had Senator Marco Rubio, and my daughter Ivanka was so, uh, impactful on that issue. It's a very important issue. But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I'm talking about, that, because, look, child care is child care is. Couldn't, you know, there's something, you have to have it – in this country you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I'm talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they're not used to — but they'll get used to it very quickly – and it's not gonna stop them from doing business with us, but they'll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Uh, those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we're talking about, including child care, that it's going to take care. We're gonna have - I, I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time, coupled with, uh, the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country, because I have to stay with child care. I want to stay with child care, but those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I'm talking about, including growth, but growth also headed up by what the plan is that I just, uh, that I just told you about. We're gonna be taking in trillions of dollars, and as much as child care, uh, is talked about as being expensive, it's, relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers we'll be taking in. We're going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people, and then we'll worry about the rest of the world. Let's help other people, but we're going to take care of our country first. This is about America first. It's about Make America Great Again, we have to do it because right now we're a failing nation, so we'll take care of it. Thank you. Very good question. Thank you.

Childcare is the largest broken industry in the US. We expect the people we entrust to care for our children to be educated on child development in higher education, use the best practices for growth and development, provide healthy balanced meals, encourage play and physical wellness, promote collaboration, educate our kids, have safety and health knowledge, and so much more, all for pennies. While these childcare workers get little pay, the waitlist for a spot in a daycare is long since the number of providers is lower than demand. The cost for a family are nationally on average of around 25% (10k per year) of the median income (just under 38k per year), but at the median income level the person isn't eligible for childcare cost assistance. In Indiana this is even worse than the national average at 30% of income for childcare. The cost and availability of childcare is a barrier that needs addressed, and yes this is a crisis.
W4C's Aimee West visited Indiana Public Radio to talk about Indiana's childcare crisis last week and that segment aired this on 5/20's Morning Edition. The good news is that SB2 passed this legislative session which expands Pre-K and childcare funding, but there is still a childcare workforce shortage, the cost of childcare in Indiana ranks as the most expensive in the country, relative to income and childcare in our state costs more on average than in-state tuition at IUPUI. In short, Indiana must invest in our childcare and early learning workforce to dig out from our childcare access and affordability crisis. Tune in and learn more: https://lnkd.in/gxXmTKMX

**Voluntary charges** We have received a number of queries from our members about the removal of guidance stating that additional early years charges "must be voluntary" for parents. ? We have raised this to the DfE who have confirmed the following: ? "The policy has not changed. As set out in A1.36 of the guidance, local authorities should work with providers and parents to ensure that all parents, including disadvantaged families, have fair access to a free place, which must be delivered completely free of charge. The free childcare entitlements are not intended to cover the costs of meals, other consumables (such as nappies or sun cream), additional hours or additional activities (such as trips). Providers may charge a fee for these additions. ? "However, we removed the line regarding charges being voluntary in order to provide clarity to readers.?This was partially based on feedback we received during our testing period with a small number of local authorities, providers and relevant bodies. If a parent is unable to pay for consumables or if a parent wishes to provide their own, then the parent and provider can discuss alternative options. This could include allowing parents to supply their own meals or nappies, or waiving or reducing the cost of meals and snacks. As set out in clause A1.33 of the guidance such charges should not be made a condition of accessing a free place." The guidance can be found here bit.ly/4bDQoUD and the changes relate to the section on charging
