Proudly supporting those who serve, Runnymede Borough Council is pleased to confirm it has secured the gold award from the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme! The national scheme, run by the UK Ministry of Defence is aimed at fostering greater relations between military and civilian communities. The Council has taken a number of actions to demonstrate its backing for defence and the military, including serving personnel, their families, reservists, cadets and others supporting the military establishment. These include: ? Creating forces-friendly human resources policies to support staff who are reserves or Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers, including providing extra annual leave. ?Hosting a reserves recruitment event to encourage employees to consider joining the reserve armed forces. ?Including criteria around support for armed forces and employing service leavers in the Runnymede Business Awards’ Employer of the Year award. ?Updating the Housing Allocations Policy which waivers the three-year connection to the borough for any serving forces person, bereaved/divorced spouse and seriously injured. A survey by Syracuse’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that 53% of active duty, reservists, National Guard, and veterans cited "educational benefits" as a key reason for their military service. Yet, year after year we are seeing a decline in these benefits. My husband is currently pursuing a second degree using the GI Bill, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. It’s troubling how often veterans face obstacles when trying to access their VA benefits—an issue that has persisted for years. I’m interested in hearing from others who have experienced similar issues: 1. Have you faced difficulties with accessing GI Bill benefits? 2. In the military, we call it the commander's intent. This is the commander's intent: this is the expectation we are setting forward. And here's the operations order (op order): this is what needs to happen. Now we need the non-commissioned officers to come up with a plan of how it gets achieved, and we need the junior enlisted soldiers to achieve it. At all three levels—the officer level, the non-commissioned officers, and the junior enlisted soldiers—everyone has some level of buy-in. One person, the commander, got to decide the "what," and he's asking for support (not help!) from the ranks, from the troops within.
