The Department recently hosted the “2024 SOSH DC Reunion” for former faculty and academic majors. 100 members of the Lincoln Brigade enjoyed catching up with their colleagues and learning about recent events across the Department. Connections across SOSH remain strong even for those years removed from their experiences at West Point and the Lincoln Brigade will continue this legacy well into the future. Go SOSH!

Pupils who take part in cadets at school have an 'edge' according to a new study published by Professor Simon Denny, Professor Richard Hazenberg and Dr Claire Peterson-Young of the University of Northampton. The report, titled ‘Getting an Edge: The Impact and Value of the Cadet Forces in Wales’ was commissioned by the RFCA for Wales, and found that participation in the cadet forces led to increased social mobility, improved educational outcomes and enhanced employability. Professor Denny, lead author of the report (and advisory officer for The Ulysses Trust), said: "Young people that are or have been in the cadet forces for 2 years or more develop attributes and gain skills, experiences and qualifications that give them a clear advantage - an ‘edge’ - over their non-cadet peers, in applications for further or higher education and employment. "This edge is particularly important for those young people who are economically disadvantaged." The study also found that adult volunteers also benefit from being members of the cadet forces, with the skills and qualifications they gain often leading to better career opportunities. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/eBigkyJA
“The main benefit of being a member of the cadet forces in Wales is the young person gets ‘an edge’ – they have an advantage over their non-cadet peers, and that advantage shows itself in both applications for higher or further education but also employment,” says Professor Simon Denny as he talks about a new report celebrating the positive impact of the cadet forces in Wales. https://ow.ly/v3YL50SXnXX @ArmyCadetsUK @BBCWalesNews

In 1974, a group of friends, inspired by the experiences of one who had returned from a Peace Corps assignment, embarked on a transformative mission, which led to the creation of WES. Their purpose was clear: To fill a critical void in the United States education landscape by offering credential evaluations to individuals with international credentials. Over the last 50 years, WES has become a leading social enterprise in the international education landscape, supporting the evolution, innovation, and growth of programs and policies that support the communities it serves. We are excited to see what the next 50 years will bring! Learn more about the foundation of WES and our growth over the last 50 years, here: https://ow.ly/4cay50Shca4 #WES50

At dinner I learned my friends Auckland Santa Parade team on Sunday is bigger than any of the 3 NZDF service forces (struggling for people), and twice as big as this maritime nations Navy, during the biggest pacific arms race since WW2. There are 2 common factors: 1. Purpose. Having a clear and compelling purpose draws people to an endeavour, to lead, to contribute value. 2. Volunteer, Part-Time, Community-tied: People have diverse purposes. No longer are we tied to one role / one employer. We seek to pursue life goals alongside even our primary purpose. Tying purposes to community creates exponential connection, exponential participation, and therefore capability en masse. Purpose and Connection, Stronger together.

We’re thrilled by the overwhelming response to our recently launched?RFS Foreign and Commonwealth Programme! But we need your help. This initiative is designed to support military spouses from Commonwealth countries in obtaining Statements of Comparability for their academic qualifications, making it easier for them to pursue career opportunities and further education here in the UK. ? These spouses make immense personal and professional sacrifices to support their partners as they relocate around the world in service to our King and country. The personal costs can be significant, and our programme aims to ease some of these financial burdens by covering the cost of obtaining a Statement of Comparability, helping them access the UK employment market. ? To expand our support, we need your help to purchase additional Statement of Comparability bundles. By sponsoring a bundle, you can play a key role in creating lasting social impact and helping us support more spouses. ? Interested in making a difference? During the week of 24-27 June 24 in Puerto Rico, representatives from Navy Medicine (BUMED N3N5 and NMFL Subordinate Cmds, NECE & NMPH) met with Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Hon. Meredith Berger. The Navy Medicine Team took the lead on addressing the Community Health and Safety focus area as part of the SECNAV-Led US-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 in a Tabletop Exercise (TTX). This exercise involved Partner Nations (PNs) from four (4) regions (North-West, East, Central, and Western) to ID opportunities for collaboration in addressing climate change activities across the Caribbean. The key opportunities identified are: 1) Expansion of Health Security Cooperation (HSC) efforts across the Caribbean (Continued Promise, KLEs, SME Engagements [HN/US], KSA sustainment, and other GHE Activities) to include Mental Health Support. 2) Standardization and streamlining of support approval to include medical credentialing for rapid support and partnering with Caribbean partners. 3) Nation-specific Cultural Sensitivity Training in support of HSC Engagements and response planning/execution. 4) Emergency Response Stockpiles - Distributing storage to mitigate risk/impact of climate change events to response capabilities/capacity.
