If you’re currently searching for internships in government and law, here’s a tip I’d suggest as a former Capitol Hill Intern: don’t underestimate the power of your experience in Clubs and Organizations. ?? Oftentimes, people believe paid work experience and/or prior internships are what get you these top internships. Although it definitely helps, it is not a necessary prerequisite. ?? When I was applying to my Congressional Internship, one extracurricular I highlighted heavily was my involvement in the Model United Nations (UN) team at my University. During that time, I had increased my public speaking abilities, writing abilities, and interpersonal relationships. ?? Whether you partake in Model UN, other organizations like Mock Trial, or even volunteer for a cause deep in your heart, as long as it has been valuable to your personal growth, be confident in it; it could be what sets you apart to land your next internship! ?? I came across this internship opportunity and was surprised by the tone and expectations outlined. Statements like "ONLY THE STRONGEST AND BEST LEGAL MINDS SURVIVE" are intimidating and may deter potential candidates. Expecting an intern to commit for 6 months during their degree is outright unreasonable. Interns are expected to possess extensive skills in drafting and street smarts, yet the mentor admits to providing minimal guidance. This contradicts the very essence of an internship, which should focus on learning, mentorship, and guidance. A meager stipend does not justify these high demands. I am glad so employers are taking the initiative to recruit and help recent graduates, but I can't help but wonder why there are no programs to help existing employees complete their career paths. It would be so beneficial to help their existing assets enhance their knowledge with so many changes happening daily in our fields. Tips to remember for your VIRTUAL internships (exclusive for law students)! ★ Get your hands on using the popular databases (SCC Online, Manupatra) at least a week before. ★ Write introductory emails to your Partner, Associates, etc. ★ Understand the mode of communication and seeking work. ★ Reach out for seeking feedback each time you submit the work. ★ On the last day, send thank you emails to everyone you worked with including the HR and also ask the process for seeking the certificate.
