Only ~454 Ethiopian wolves survive in the country’s isolated Afroalpine regions. These unique and endangered animals are threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation and isolation. New research led by Jorgelina Marino with the EWCP team examines these threats and outlines urgent conservation measures needed. See: https://lnkd.in/dZ-FW3Ne This paper is part of the Wildlife Biology "Wolves Across Borders Special Issue", tackling worldwide wolf ecology and behaviours, plus the challenges of managing human-wolf interactions and governance. Did you know that among the majestic giants of the animal kingdom, there exists a rare and extraordinary group known as "monotuskers"? These remarkable elephants possess only a single tusk, making them a unique and captivating subject of study and admiration. Monotusker elephants, also referred to as "one-tusked elephants," are a rare phenomenon in the elephant population. Unlike their counterparts with two tusks, these magnificent creatures have only one, which can grow to remarkable lengths and serve as a defining characteristic of their individuality. The presence of a single tusk in monotusker elephants can result from various factors, including genetic predisposition, injury, or environmental influences. Despite their distinctiveness, monotuskers seamlessly adapt to their surroundings and play vital roles within their ecosystems. Studying monotusker elephants provides valuable insights into elephant behavior, ecology, and conservation. By understanding the unique challenges and adaptations of these singular individuals, we can develop more effective strategies to protect and preserve elephant populations worldwide. As we continue to unravel the mysteries of the natural world, let us marvel at the wonder of monotusker elephants and recognize the importance of safeguarding their habitats for generations to come. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for these extraordinary creatures and the ecosystems they inhabit. #MeruNationalPark #MonotuskerElephants #ElephantConservation #WildlifeProtection #Biodiversity #NatureWonders #WildlifeResearch #ConservationEfforts ????

Chlaenius tristis SCHALLER, commonly known as the somber ground beetle, is a member of the Carabidae family, with a body length of up to 13 mm. The entire body is black, with a glossy head that sometimes exhibits a coppery sheen. The pronotum and elytra are matte. + The somber ground beetle is a Palaearctic species. Its range spans from the Pyrenees and the Basque Country in the west, to beyond the Ob River in Russia in the east, and from the central part of the British Isles, Sweden, Norway, and Finland in the north. To the south, its distribution reaches the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea up to the European part of Turkey, but it is not found in Greece and the Balkans. Also found in North Africa. Chlaenius tristis inhabits overgrown edges of marshlands and wetlands. It is also found on sandy or calcareous substrates with standing or slowly flowing water. Occasionally, these beetles can be spotted along the seashores. The somber ground beetle feeds on small invertebrates such as insects and their larvae, snails, and earthworms. In Europe, including Poland, the presence of Chlaenius tristis is not considered endangered and does not fall under species protection. #Chlaenius Tristis #SombreGround Beetle #GroundBeetle #Beetle #Carabidae #Entomology #Insects #Biodiversity #Conservation #Nature #Wildlife #Ecology #Marshlands #Wetlands #Palaearctic #Elytra #Pronotum #Invertebrates #Beetle Habitat #SomberBeetle #European Wildlife #NonEndangered #Species Protection #Environmental Education #Nature Photography RCIN - Repozytorium Cyfrowe Instytutów Naukowych

Central to our conservation efforts is the notion that individual lions have different behaviors and personality traits- not a monolithic species of conflict- therefore poison is needlessly destructive for managing conflict. An interesting paper just published examines the importance of recognizing this and how it is related to conservation. Though not my work, I am sure we will be citing it in future publications.
I am SO thrilled to announce that my first scientific paper has been published! So many thanks to my excellent and supportive co-authors, Dr. Marc Bekoff (professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder) and Dr. Gosia Bryja (instructor of geography and environmental studies at Columbia College in Vancouver, B.C)

Excellent demonstration of how small changes can have significant impact.
???????? New research from Kenya's Ol Pejeta Conservancy details how a territorial ant war had a profound impact on the local lion population. According to groundbreaking research led by zoologist Douglas Kamaru, invasive ants set off a fable-worthy chain reaction in the heart of the conservancy ecosystem. These small insects disrupted the delicate symbiosis between native acacia ants and the trees they lived in. The trees, undefended by their tiny protectors, were subsequently feasted on by the region's elephants. As a consequence, lions, navigating a hunting ground with fewer places to hide, needed to adjust their hunting strategy, opting for more dangerous but slower-moving buffalo over their usual prey, the zebras. “This study was a beautiful snapshot of how complicated ecosystems can be – this idea that you pull on a single thread and the whole system reacts,” said Meredith Palmer, an ecologist at Fauna & Flora International ???? Yet another compelling proof point affirming that research into the world of insects is critical in unlocking the secrets that shape our planet! #Biodiversity #Insects #Ecology
