Clinician-in-the-Loop ML is coming to AMIA 2024! I'm thrilled to announce that our work, titled "Beyond off-the-shelf Machine Learning: case for clinician-in-the-loop", has been accepted as a poster presentation at the AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) Informatics Summit in Boston next March! Together with my dear colleague Pietro Arina, MD, PhD(c), we are exploring the exciting potential of collaborative efforts between clinicians and data scientists, moving beyond the limitations of "low-code" or "no-code" solutions for AI implementation. We believe that true innovation in healthcare AI lies in leveraging the combined expertise of both clinical and technical minds. By actively involving clinicians throughout the ML modeling process, we can ensure that the resulting algorithms are not only accurate and efficient, but also deeply attuned to the nuances of real-world clinical practice. Where AI will impact healthcare in 2024 #smartHIT

Last week I spoke at the AI Healthcare Summit, organized by the local AAPI chapter in Milpitas, CA. Thanks for inviting me, Drs. Archana Bindra and Leena Gupta! My topic was “Physician vs Machine - Clinical Practice in the Age of AI”. I spoke about how AI will increase the efficiency and quality of care. It won’t stop there. It has the potential to improve clinical science at a rapid pace and fundamentally change the business model of healthcare. Of course, there will hiccups, bumps and false starts along the way. Convergence of several new technologies will make new business models possible. The next several years will be an exciting time in innovation and entrepreneurship. These changes will challenge our assumptions of our role as healers. It is about to change. We may become more of coaches and facilitators. Many physicians will say, “I did not go to medical school to do this!” First of all, what you learned in your medical school will become obsolete soon if it has not already happened. It would be considered malpractice, if I did today, what I learnt in medical school! Secondly, medical knowledge is growing at an exponential rate today. It would be impossible to keep up with the new knowledge and to be able to utilize it in practice. Thirdly, with AI, decisions have to be made based on new knowledge that will be coming in every second! Knowledge will be dynamic and shifting every minute even without our own conscious awareness of it. So, the bottom line is - physicians need to learn and understand how AI works, to be able to prepare for the coming changes in technology and business models. As Robert Pearl, M.D. mentioned recently at the InnovatorMD Global Summit - now is an opportune moment for physicians to lead the change with AI technology. I say, “You can drive the bus, get on the bus, or walk home. Don’t be run over!” Which group will you be in? Comments? My autistic daughter, Siri (pictured below), loves to come to meetings with me. She listens to the talks keenly. After all she wants to become a neuroscientist! "Here are three major waves we can expect in 2024 that aren’t being talked about much (if at all): 1) Use of genAI to generate compelling and self-consistent training content for doctors. To create effective and fun training cases, you often need a large space for doctors to explore patient responses, test results, outcomes, etc. 2) Use of genAI to solve the hard problems in healthcare. There is a common misconception that genAI’s R&D value is in replacing low-to-mid-level programmers. We’ve found that the most compelling use of genAI is when top-decile engineers use it to rapidly accelerate solving extremely complex R&D problems, especially those that require deep multidisciplinary knowledge across math, physics, medicine and other fields. 3) Use of genAI to solve loneliness. There is an epidemic of human loneliness that is responsible for both tremendous psychological suffering and a broad set of negative health outcomes. In 2024, geriatric patients can spend time with their favorite fictional or non-fictional human, complete with photo-accurate rendering and a voice and personality that is indiscernible from the real thing – a personal confidante who cares about nothing more than whatever that patient wants to talk about that day."
