At Zafrens, we're doing foundational work that encapsulates a lot of possibilities even in the few things we do. I had the opportunity to talk about our immunotherapy work in this discussion, and will look forward to sharing more nuances over time. https://lnkd.in/gnQpz5Wd [For the broader context - the function of a cell is dictated by the levels and/or sequences of various molecules it contains. It's been hard to measure the molecules in a cell and simultaneously study what they make the cell do (or, equivalently, predict how the molecules reconfigure if the cells is disturbed by drugs, and its consequences on the cell). Most of our progress in biology has come from charting this ome-to-function map in small, tiny increments - by altering levels or sequence of one molecule at a time, for instance. But even a 10 base sequence of DNA can exist in ~1 million forms, so studying cells at low throughput only tells us so much. Zafrens unleashes our ability to map lots, and lots of molecular changes to each of their individual functional effects. The implications of this touches all of biology, because once you have dense maps of 'cause-and-effect', we can start predicting (and engineering) desired cell states and cell behavior more accurately. Could this help predict if a molecule will work for a patient? We think so. Rather than empirically observing physiological responses and cell-functional responses, we feel understanding how the collection of molecules inside a cell respond could give us more predictive information. That is what we are excited to prove to ourselves, but along the way we are eager to unlock lots of other transformative opportunities with our high-throughput, high-resolution peek into biology].
