???Taking a Proactive Approach: Understanding Medication's Impact on Cognition?? ?? What’s the best outcome I aim for in a workshop? It’s simple: that participants walk away empowered to use the tools and knowledge they’ve gained and apply them. One of the biggest challenges I see? Medication. Now, I’m not a doctor, and I have nothing against medication when necessary, but I know some medications can have side effects on cognition, whether short-term or long-term. Before starting any medication, it’s essential to have an open conversation about the risks vs. benefits. Yet, this conversation rarely happens. In fact, I’ve yet to meet a workshop participant whose GP or pharmacist has proactively discussed the potential cognitive impact of their medication with them. And that’s why I am such a strong advocate for health literacy. No one knows your medical history as well as you do—so it’s vital to ask the right questions and stay vigilant. Just recently, a participant reached out after a workshop, saying: "Michelle, you won’t believe it—three out of five of my medications have a cognitive impact." He was shocked, but he booked an appointment with his pharmacist to review his medications and discuss the cognitive effects. I was delighted to hear it! The takeaway? Whatever we choose to take can affect our brain health, and being mindful of this is a step forward in dementia prevention. ?? #HealthLiteracy #DementiaPrevention #CognitiveHealth #WorkshopImpact #PatientAdvocacy
