Keep Calm and Carry On: A New Take? A few years ago, I started participating in the 52frames photography community. It is a beautifully simple idea. Each week, a challenge or theme is set, and you submit one photo related to it. 52 weeks in a year means 52 challenges and 52 photos, hence "52frames". The only "judge" is yourself. A submission cannot be "disqualified" for not adequately meeting the challenge/theme. There are no rankings or awards, just a community of photographers who may comment, make suggestions, or offer appreciation. Each week, a panel of "pickers" chooses 52 photos from among the submissions to highlight—the 52picks. The pickers change each week, and the picks are entirely subjective and not based on specific technical or artistic criteria. This year, I am on track to complete the entire year of challenges for the first time! 47 down, 5 to go! Along the way, I have learned a lot about photographic and (digital) processing techniques. I cannot deny being pleased that two of my submissions this year, including last week's, have been featured in the 52picks list. But more important than appearing in that list is this... I was not as happy with my shot last week as I have been with some previous submissions that did not get "picked". This shows we can't always rely on our "inner critic". Often embodying the "stiff upper lip" national stereotype of Brits, this is perhaps a more optimistic and satisfying interpretation of "Keep Calm and Carry On". Keep doing your best; someone will appreciate it.
