Many women candidates who are also moms focus on the "campaign" tasks but do not realize how much life personally changes once they are elected. In the picture below, I had become the first Black Alderwoman for my ward. Life was incredibly busy but manageable during that time as I raised my two children who were in baseball, basketball, dance lessons in Chicago, track, and more. ?????? When I ran for the city council, I did not plan to serve only 2/4 years of my term. But I did, because I decided to run for Mayor and became the first Black Mayor of my hometown. ?? Once elected to office, every relationship you have changes. If you struggle to prioritize your own self-care, you can become overwhelmed with all the demands on your time for meetings, ribbon cuttings, community events, and more - and these events are to fulfill your role as an elected official. ?? This does not include your personal responsibilities for children's activities, family gatherings, PTO meetings, community events, etc... Before you throw your hat ?? in the ring, I would encourage you to seek guidance as you consider the boundaries you will need to establish (people will be asking for money?? for every community event), consider how to structure a wellness plan, and build a supportive network. Women are needed in public office. ??♀????????????? We represent 51%+ of the population in the United States, yet are elected to only 33% of the legislative seats. We need your leadership and your unique approaches to bringing solutions to our communities. But we need you healthy so you can be most impactful. Wouldn't it be great to have a group of like minded fathers to help find solutions to a home or work situation? Wouldn't it be nice to know that there are other dads just like you that have your back and have been in the trenches and know what you are going through? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to build your career with connections to people who value being a father as much as you do? I am a #singledad in #sandiego - trying to raise a child and build a career in a city that was voted one of the most expensive in the United States. I share custody with my child's mother and most of the time that I don't have my child I spend networking and helping to build my brand. My time is almost always spoken for as well as my funds. I went looking for resources for single fathers in San Diego and it turns out they are few and far between and pretty much none for just dads. What I found out is that there is not many resources for dads, period. I am taking this as an opportunity to be of service for my fellow dads here in San Diego. I would like to build a group of like-minded professional fathers who can meet on a regular basis during the month to build relationships and be each other's solutions in fatherhood, in business and life. We don't have an easy job and we carry more baggage than we let on. It would be great to help one another build easier and better lives that our children and families will benefit from. I'll bring the coffee so we can have some conversations and start building professional fathers network that builds amazing dads. Day in the Life of an Organizer: Just Shut Up Sorry if the title is a little jarring today, but I think it’s a simple principle. Sometimes you just have to shut. up. The old adage goes “there’s a time and a place for everything,” and a huge part of the role of an organizer is to know that time and place WELL. Yesterday, I joined Somos Spring Branch in a house meeting conducted in the Spring Branch Family Development Center. For those new to the idea, house meetings are a vital tool in community organizing. Created by leaders such as Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers labor union, these meetings were extremely effective in understanding first-hand issues facing communities and increasing buy-in to them. (What better way to celebrate and honor #HispanicHeritageMonth than by learning from Hispanic leaders who drove fundamental change in the US?) I’m a new organizer (next week will make a month with GCLC & TMO), and I’m even newer to the Spring Branch community. Although I have a lot of buy-in to the community—professionally and personally—I have not lived in Spring Branch long enough to begin to fathom what it’s like working, raising a family, and engaging with government officials in Spring Branch. So, I stayed quiet. I didn’t let my very limited perspective lead the room. In my silence, I heard from mothers who worked ridiculous hours and still supported their kids through PTAs within the district. I heard from students who felt judged by their Latin heritage and economic backgrounds. People were frustrated, tired, and angry, but most of all, they were ready to make change. THOSE stories were the ones that really mattered. THOSE are the stories that will drive neighbors, friends, and others in Spring Branch to vote, to take part in their schools, to fundraise, to campaign, and to take back power. Trust me, it is okay to relinquish the bullhorn to let someone else raise their voice. Scratch that. As an organizer it is quite literally your job to do so. Listennnnnnnn. Take copious notes. Talk to others. Recognize those who you think will drive change and empower them to do so. Then make the change! We’re excited to share another fantastic story from our returning volunteers! Today, Paul Coffield, a UX design consultant, talks about why he decided to come back to the Scottish Tech Army and how he’s making an impact. Paul's three key reasons for coming back: 1. Flexibility to work with his personal rhythm: Paul appreciates that the STA allows him to step in and out of projects based on his capacity, especially with his ADHD diagnosis. He values the ability to engage when he can and step back when needed: “My time with the STA has allowed me to work to that rhythm... I can step back in and pick something up... and I can just as easily step back from things." 2. Control over project involvement: Paul enjoys working solo on certain projects, which gives him control over his schedule and commitments: “I've ended up being solo on a number of projects... I have more control over setting when we can meet... and knowing when I will be able to deliver something." 3. Opportunities regardless of experience: Paul believes that STA offers something for everyone, regardless of experience level, and that he can contribute by helping others without fully immersing himself in a project: “There is something for people to do, regardless of how much experience they do or don't have... I don't need to be fully involved in a project myself to still bring value to the STA." To cap off the week, we’ll be hosting an online drop-in session on Friday at 12pm. Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of working with a group of dedicated community leaders. Our topic of discussion was around volunteerism, focusing on what organizations can do to attract and retain volunteers. Here are some of the tips I shared. 1. Be organized and ready when people show up to volunteer. 2. Craft a positive experience for your volunteers. 3. Work on your internal issues. If there is disconnect or chaos around your board table, it will be felt by others. 4. Think outside the bubble. It’s easy to get caught up in our own circle of influence. 5. Tell people what you do and why. It’s highly likely that people aren’t even sure what your organization is all about. 6. Make it super easy for people to sign up to volunteer. And get back to them in a timely fashion. 7. Be respectful and appreciative of your volunteers and the time they contribute to your organization. What else would you add to the list? Expanding your Perspective ?? This Friday, I’m excited to attend “Reparations and Reproductive Health Equity”—a conversation hosted by UC Davis and the CALIFORNIA BLACK WOMEN'S HEALTH PROJECT. Dr. Monica R. McLemore will lead an inspiring discussion on how reparations for Black women can transform maternal health outcomes in California. It’s not just about healthcare, but healing and justice for future generations. What Can We Do Today? ?? As we head into the rest of the week, I challenge us all: What’s one small action you can take today to make your space more inclusive?
