Sussex County Health Coalition was proud to celebrate National Community Health Worker (CHW) Awareness Week, an annual observance dedicated to recognizing the vital role of CHWs.??Sussex County Health Coalition acknowledges the dedication, compassion, and impact that CHWs have on the health and well-being of our communities.?Peggy Geisler, Executive Director shared that “creating a quality Health Workforce, one that supports and empowers all our citizens, is critical.?Since many of our residents may have barriers to understanding the growing complexity of the healthcare system, including labs reports, diagnosis, health insurance and even prescriptions, it is important they have support. Barriers like a patient’s literacy level, digital access and even language barriers can foster poor health outcomes.??Having trained advocates is critical toward positive patient health while reducing the cost of services to the consumer and the state.” We encourage everyone to join us in recognizing and thanking CHWs for their exceptional service and dedication to our communities. "The country is inching toward universal coverage. If everybody who qualified for either the ACA’s financial assistance or its Medicaid expansion were successfully enrolled in the program, we would get closer still: More than half of the uninsured are technically eligible for government health care aid. "Today, 10 states have an uninsured rate below 5 percent — not quite universal coverage, but getting close. Other states may be hovering around the national average, but that still represents a dramatic improvement from the pre-ACA reality: In New Mexico, for instance, 23 percent of its population was uninsured in 2010; now just 8 percent is. "Their success indicates that, even without another major federal health care reform effort, it is possible to reduce the number of uninsured in the United States. If states are more aggressive about using all of the tools available to them under the ACA, the country could continue to bring down the number of uninsured people within its borders." #healthcare

A one-size-fits-all approach to #healthliteracy is going to have limited results. Non-white people are often distrustful of the health system, given a history of racism, neglect and lack of representation. Yet, the challenge for Grapevine Health has been getting that message across to health insurance payers. For non-white people, representation matters just as much as *not* talking in complicated medical terms. “People (in the community) understand what we’re saying and we help them by speaking in plain language,” Dr. Lisa told me. “The messengers are people who look like them and that matters.” What are some ways we can bridge the gap between greater effort to improve #HealthLiteracy and the specific concerns of non-white communities? https://lnkd.in/g4n-JX-3

Excited to share this article that highlights insights on tackling Social Determinants of Health (SDOHs)! It delves into how these social factors impact access to healthcare and the innovative solutions healthcare leaders are implementing. SDOHs encompass a range of factors, from income disparities to racial bias and discrimination, language barriers, and geographic limitations. These challenges can hinder individuals from accessing vital care, perpetuating health inequities. At Providence Health Plan, we're committed to addressing these disparities through initiatives like our food insecurity pilot program, a vital component of our Health For All initiative. By understanding and addressing the root causes of health inequities, we can create a more inclusive healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of all patient populations. Join me in the fight for health equity! Let's ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has access to the care they need to thrive. #HealthEquity #SDOH #HealthForAll https://lnkd.in/eYBnvXP4

The Commonwealth Fund released a report that found every state in the U.S. has deep racial and ethnic disparities in their healthcare systems. Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous Americans experienced huge differences in their health outcomes, healthcare access, and quality of care. White and Asian residents had the best health outcomes across all states. The report suggests that policies and investments are needed to make healthcare more equitable, such as supporting primary care physicians, social service providers, and community health workers in Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous communities. The report also highlights the need for providing more and better health insurance. #Healthcare #Equity #Access

Last week, on a CEO Boot Camp coaching call, we discussed why building relationships with lawmakers—at the local, state, or federal level—is crucial for the future of your health center and the communities it serves. FQHCs are highly regulated by the federal government and receive federal funding to serve people who do not have health insurance, are low-income, or live in underserved areas. Federal funding is critical to the financial sustainability of health centers that serve many uninsured people. Thankfully, health center funding has historically had bipartisan support (thank you to our many congresswomen and men!) and is allocated in Congress' budget annually. However, health center funding may only sometimes be a priority to Congress, and if they don't know about your excellent work, the funding may not be at the top of their minds. Building relationships with them through their local or health policy staff is so important. ?? Here's How to Take Action: ?Contact the staff and invite them to your health center. Invite your Congress members to visit your health center when they are home on break. Tell them many facts about your services to the people in their states or districts. ? Provide information about the patient population you serve, including Veterans, the uninsured, Medicaid and Medicare recipients, and people below the federal poverty level. ?Local and state lawmakers are also essential to the health center's success, so schedule meetings with county and city commissioners and state legislators. Give them tours of your sites and the facts you created for your Congress members. These relationships will go a long way in asking them to support important bills during the legislative session. You'll be better positioned to apply for state and local grants. Elected officials aren't usually healthcare experts, but you can still teach them about the vital work your health center accomplishes in your community. Start building those relationships today and see the future benefits it brings to your health center! #healthcenter #fqhc #healthcareadvocacy #communityhealth #federalfunding #lawmakersupport #publichealth #healthcareaccess #medicaid #medicare #veteranhealthcare #underservedcommunities #chc
