I'm excited to share the latest episode of DEI After 5, where we dive deep into the topic of inclusive leadership with the incredible Eddie Pate, Ph.D. (He/Him) / Published Author! This week's episode explores what inclusive leadership looks like in practice, especially during challenging times when diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts are under scrutiny. Here are three key takeaways that I believe every leader should reflect on: Embrace Vulnerability and Empathy: Eddie emphasizes the importance of being vulnerable as a leader. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being willing to listen, learn, and take feedback. Inclusive leaders must cultivate empathy and understand the diverse experiences of their team members. This means stepping outside of your own perspective and genuinely seeking to understand how others perceive the world. Remember, it’s not about you; it’s about how others experience their reality. The Power of Daily Practices: Inclusive leadership is not an overwhelming task; it can be empowering! Eddie introduces the concept of "dropping pebbles"—small, inclusive actions that can create ripples of change within an organization. By committing to daily practices that promote inclusivity, leaders can foster a culture of belonging. This can be as simple as checking in with team members, acknowledging their unique contributions, or creating spaces for open dialogue. Recognize and Address Privilege: One of the most profound insights from our conversation is the need for leaders to reflect on their own privileges and biases. Eddie challenges the notion of colorblindness and highlights that true equity means recognizing and addressing the systemic barriers that exist. By understanding our own intersectionality and how it shapes our experiences, we can lead more effectively and create environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I encourage you to listen to this episode and reflect on how you can implement these takeaways in your own leadership journey. Together, we can create more inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued and empowered. Tune in tomorrow at 5:15p ET and let’s start making those ripples of change!

“Corporate culture”… What a noble notion. Or an exciting myth some could say! Why is this goal we all seek to reach as positive leaders, so intangible? I'm excited to share this thought-provoking article by Erin Mayer https://lnkd.in/ezEiiGfG : "Build a corporate culture that works" on Harvard Business Review: https://lnkd.in/eKQ-yWRP a professor at INSEAD, where she directs the executive education program “Leading Across Borders and Cultures”, Erin debunks the commonly blurry aspiration of “corporate culture” and breaks down how to create one that truly works. In a few words, instead of only promoting vague values (which nobody will disapprove of!), focus on real-life dilemmas that your team faces and provide clear decision-making guidance. This resonates with the themes we discuss on my Positive leadership podcast https://lnkd.in/evA7d4K7. Clear and actionable cultural guidelines can empower teams to make consistent, value-driven decisions. Paraphrasing Mahatma Gandhi quote "A nation's culture.", I’m deeply convinced that a company’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people Let's explore how we can turn abstract values into practical, everyday actions that drive positive change in our workplaces. #PositiveLeadership #CorporateCulture #BusinessSuccess

Leadership is not easy! One topic I am most passionate about sharing from my leadership journey is a fundamental component of engagement I refer to as “leading with grace.” On today’s Servant Leadership Today podcast, "Cultivating a Culture of Respect and Empathy in Leadership Landscapes," my co-host Andy Wilson, executive director of Doing Business in Bentonville, and I break down my three pillars of Leading with Grace, and one thing we believe will change the course of how you are viewed as a leader. ? Considering only 34% of employees feel engaged in their workplace (according to a Gallup 2023 survey), we’ve taken a close look at the principles that can define your leadership style and catapult the impact you have in fostering a thriving team and making a positive impact on your employees’ lives, including: ?? Being present ?? Building trust ?? Adding value in your interactions ?? Caring for others (and demonstrating it) ?? Defending dignity ?? Fueling purpose, and ?? Embracing honesty ? ?? We hope you’ll listen in on our conversation today! https://lnkd.in/g6xGWXbS. We got pretty honest about times when we’ve had to learn lessons the hard way and hope that our stories save you from those mistakes. Let us know in the comments how you create an environment where employees are well-engaged. ?? In case you missed the last few episodes, please check out some of our recent episodes about servant leadership which not only include takeaways from our own careers but actionable ways you can increase your presence and influence as a leader https://lnkd.in/gdvB_4mf ? ?? When the team isn’t implementing the vision, several things could be to blame. Perhaps: ??They don’t see the relevance to their own work. ??It seems disconnected from the current strategy. ??The organization isn’t designed to support an initiative of this scale. ??There are too many competing priorities. ??Other structural, workflow, or decision-making processes are impeding progress. ??Teams and individuals have competing incentives. ??They are trying to hit a moving target. ("What good looks like" is fuzzy.) ??It requires skillsets they don’t have. ??They need a bit more guidance on the overall approach. Perhaps it’s some combination of the above. It can be hard to tell for sure when you’re close to it. No matter what the root cause, the nuances of the interactions you have with the team influence how much you can find out about what’s really going on, and how well you can support the work. At every level of the organization. You can get a good feel for this in the first episode of Liz Kislik’s "Better at Work with Liz" series. At under 10 minutes, it shows the situation and emotion better than any checklist or article could. Take a look if you’re trying to get a better understanding of how you might influence your own situations at work. As Liz says, “It takes real effort to build people up so that you don’t need to watch over them.” https://lnkd.in/gymQ_nKr #conflictmanagement #vision #leadership #leadershipdevelopment

1 个月I absolutely loved talking with Sacha for this episode of DEI after 5. I’m a big fan of all Sacha does around Inclusion, equity and leadership and quite frankly it was an honor to be invited to be a guest. Her voice in this space is needed and gives me hope that we will weather the insidious and hate-filled attacks on Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity (ID&E). Please follow the incredible work Sacha does for Inclusion and psychological safe work cultures. DEI After 5 Sacha Thompson, MBA, MEd, ACC
