I talk to a lot of transitioning personnel and HM and have started keeping track of the problems that people have. The top 10 I list here. What do you think? 1. Failing to Adapt to a Less Hierarchical Decision-Making Process: Military decisions are often made within a strict hierarchy, but civilian workplaces can be more collaborative, requiring a shift in approach. 2. Difficulty Adjusting to Informal Communication Styles: The military's formal communication and jargon may not translate well in civilian jobs where communication can be more casual. 3. Struggling with a Less Structured Routine: Military life is highly structured, whereas civilian jobs may offer more flexibility and autonomy. 4. Not Effectively Translating Specialized Military Skills: Some military skills are highly specialized and may not have a direct civilian equivalent, requiring veterans to adapt or seek additional training. 5. Underestimating the Impact of Cultural Shifts: The unique culture of the military, with its values and traditions, is different from civilian organizational cultures, which can vary widely. 6. Difficulty Handling Ambiguity: Military tasks are usually well-defined, unlike many civilian roles where goals can be more ambiguous. 7. Overlooking the Importance of Networking: Unlike the military's merit-based promotion system, civilian career advancement often relies on networking and self-promotion. 8. Misjudging Financial Requirements and Budgeting: Veterans may underestimate living expenses in civilian life and the need for budgeting, especially if they transition without a job lined up. 9. Overlooking the Need for Continued Professional Development: Continuous learning and professional development are key in many civilian careers, contrasting with the more defined training paths in the military. 10. Failing to Seek Support and Resources: Many veterans do not fully utilize available resources like veteran support groups, job transition programs, or educational benefits that can ease the transition. Military transition Tip Four Here’s a great way to be filed in the circular container. Tell a hiring manager you’re already beyond them. Active duty creates amazingly challenging experiences in environments that are truly unique - and for good reason we don’t want those to be the norm. Telling your story through a resume is your first attempt at connecting with a new network, and people want to make meaningful connections. Having command is a unique experience; translating five operational command tours into something business-relevant was hard for me. It was an incredible honor and taught me so much - but not much that’s specifically relatable (food for a future post). Here’s the thing- command isn’t what gets you hired. Don’t misunderstand, it’s valued - but few companies actually know what your career path really was or could have been. They’re not your promotion board or your Detailer - but they’ll ask around - it all sounds important. Here’s what I’ve continued to learn: It’s all about being able to succeed without having to use that word (command). The image of issuing orders is the antithesis of a business ethos. Good commanders also realize this, but the business world has no way of comprehending that about you in advance… conclusions will be drawn. Don’t let that become a problem for you. Collaboration is the currency of the business world. People who single-handedly solve problems aren’t running companies. Here’s a related, important concept: Don’t compare your uniform service to a business role, especially C-Suite roles. That’s like saying to your future boss that you’ve already had their job (or their boss’s). See my previous post about the four new skill sets. Translating military experience takes more than a three-letter acronym, and when you believe you’re ready, bet on yourself - start your own company and go for it! That’s the power of choice. And humility. You shouldn’t be hired just because you had a job. You should be hired because of what you will bring to the specific role you’re seeking. That’s the new adventure. And it’s awesome. Join me on the oars.

Turning Military Excellence into Civilian Success ?? In the quiet corners of my week, alongside a circle of friends, we've embarked on a mission close to our hearts: guiding transitioning veterans to find their place in the civilian workforce. Our journey is not just about reshaping resumes; it's about translating valor, discipline, and unparalleled leadership into the language of potential employers. The Challenge: Despite the valuable resources like the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), many veterans find themselves at a crossroads. The task at hand? To weave their commendable military tales into a narrative that resonates in the corporate world. It's a race against time, with the window to opportunities narrowing each day. The Heart of the Matter: This isn't merely a translation of roles. It's about capturing the essence of military service - the leadership, the resilience, the adaptability - and framing it in a way that illuminates its value in civilian roles. These are the unsung qualities that can elevate any organization, often lost in translation between two distinct cultures. Our Solution: I've been channeling my energy into developing software tools designed to bridge this gap. Think of it as a tailor-made resume service, aligning the unique skills of our veterans with the needs of the civilian job market. Currently, I'm extending a hand to a select few veterans poised to make this transition, ideally within the next 1-3 months. It's a dual benefit - a boost for your career prospects and a chance for me to refine this crucial service. Join Us: If you or someone you know stands at this crossroads, looking to translate military achievements into a new career chapter, let's connect. Together, we can turn this challenge into a launching pad for the next phase of your journey. #VeteranTransition #MilitaryToCivilian #VetsHelpingVets

Attention Military Personnel: We deeply respect and appreciate your service and the unique skills you bring to the workforce. However, we’ve noticed a recurring issue that is impacting both our recruitment process and your job search success. Before applying for civilian positions, please ensure that you have completed the necessary steps to sign off from your military duties. Applying before you are fully available can create delays and complications in our hiring process. If a hiring manager reaches out and discovers that you are not yet ready to transition, this conversation might not be documented. As a result, if you apply again six months later, it may be assumed that there was an issue with your initial application. This can subconsciously affect how hiring managers view all candidates transitioning from the military, including those who have signed off and are actively seeking work. To maximize your chances of securing a position, we recommend the following steps: Complete Your Transition: Finalize all necessary military sign-off procedures before starting your job search. Prepare Your Resume: Clearly highlight your military experience, skills, and confirm your availability. Network Actively: Connect with industry professionals and participate in relevant events to build relationships and understand industry expectations. Seek Guidance: Utilize transition assistance programs and career counseling services designed for military personnel. We value your experience and want to give you the best chance of success. By applying only when you are fully available and ready to transition, you help ensure a smoother process for everyone involved and avoid potential misunderstandings that could impact future applications.
