Sulfonylureas are a class of oral medications used to manage blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. They are commonly used due to their affordability. However, these drugs increase insulin production regardless of blood sugar levels and can cause blood sugar to drop too low, leading to hypoglycemia. Repeated episodes of hypoglycemia can cause individuals to have difficulty recognizing low blood glucose levels. A recent study published in Annals of Family Medicine shows that long-term use of sulfonylureas is associated with impaired awareness of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. This risk increases the longer the patient uses this medication. Current guidelines recommend newer classes of medications over sulfonylureas.
