OBN for exploration is significantly improving imaging capabilities in the Gulf of Mexico. If only companies processing these data could choose a colourmap that accurately represents the seismic velocity. It would be quite nice to see what the velocities are rather than a distorted version. This is quite an interesting example. Woodside’s innovative approach to seismic testing has been awarded a US patent. Correctly measuring subsalt variations has challenged the seismic industry for as long as subsalt wells have been drilled. But a new method developed by Woodside’s Gulf of Mexico team is yielding impressive results that are improving data quality and efficiency. Woodside’s patented technology employs a combination of Ocean Bottom Nodes (OBN), Full Waveform Inversion, and an extended Seismic Source Halo around the Ocean Bottom Nodes.
