Thanks to my Lord JESUS and extraordinary co-authors Zuzana Brixiova Schwidrowski Jiri Balcar, I have published my first paper of the year 2025 "How credit constrained are family-owned SMEs in Arab countries?" Let's continue. https://lnkd.in/eD-pH4Ci Highlights: Family-owned SMEs are more credit constrained than their nonfamily owned counterparts. They need more credit than non-family firms, but are self-selecting themselves out of credit markets since they are less likely to apply. Family-owned SMEs with stronger governance, including a formalized written business strategy, face fewer credit constraints.

Small businesses across Australia are at breaking point, with insolvency rates climbing as high as 14,000 annually. The current cost-of-living crisis and fierce competition from larger corporations have left many SMEs struggling to stay afloat. ?? Industry experts highlight a significant gap between large and small businesses, where big players are able to negotiate lower costs, withstand economic pressures, and access more favourable financing. For small business owners, challenges like high rent, rising energy prices, and limited access to funding are putting immense strain on their operations. However, despite the grim outlook, this may present an opportunity for new entrants to thrive. Experts like Michael Fingland argue that starting a business during a downturn teaches resilience, flexibility, and the ability to seize market gaps left by others. ?? Now more than ever, Australia must focus on levelling the playing field through faster payment times, fairer competition laws, and better support for small businesses. ???? . Mthente is a micro South African business: we have survived nineteen years of many of the challenges faced by small business: red tape, a tough micro and macro economic environment, political and legislative, uncertainties, cash flow crises and restricted access to capital, limited business networks, skills shortages, crime and load-shedding.?We, therefore, have a good understanding of the challenges faced by small businesses. This, together with our strong track record in socio-economic research, has positioned us well to conduct numerous research projects in recent years on the SMME landscape in South Africa.?These include the three-year longitudinal study on SMMEs and Co-Operatives in South Africa for the Department of Small Business Development; the Annual Small Business Review and Survey for the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA); the Situational Analysis of the South African SMME Sector for the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), and the Identification of Opportunities for SMMEs and Co-Operatives within the SEZs for the DSBD. We look forward to applying all this knowledge and experience to a recent new win with the DSBD. This research focuses on the challenges, business opportunities and support required by MSMEs and Co-Operatives in the national priority sectors. Given the significant impact that small businesses have on South Africa’s GDP, as well as the vital role they play as drivers for reducing unemployment, all this research to inform policy directives is imperative. Small businesses require a supportive business and legislative environment to flourish.
