Telling someone “you don’t look Deaf” might be intended as a compliment, but it can actually come across as invalidating the Deaf person’s identity and experiences. It suggests there’s a specific way a Deaf person should look, overlooks diversity within the Deaf community, and reinforces stereotypes. To a Deaf person struggling with internalized audism, this type of comment only serves to reinforce the idea that “passing” for hearing is the goal. To a Deaf person struggling to fit into the Deaf community because of less-than-fluent ASL skills due to early language deprivation, this comment can trigger feelings of rejection and being an outsider. September is Deaf Awareness Month. The graphic below was created by Sara Miller, M.S.Ed. and posted on Instagram. She has given me permission to share it here. Sara notes that the Deaf community is diverse and that people may have a label they prefer. However, it is good for us all to recognize in general what terms to use and what not to use. This is part of understand #diversity and ensuring that we are #inclusive. [Image description: Infographic split down the middle. Left side is blue with white text: “Do Say (with a thumbs up graphic): Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Late-Deafened, Hard of Hearing.” Right side is yellow with black text: “Don’t Say (with a graphic of a hand on a stop sign): Deaf and Dumb, Deaf-Mute, Hearing Impaired.” A rectangle is in the bottom right corner with a side note inside: “It’s important to note that the community is diverse and people personally choose the label they most prefer to identify with - However, these are the most commonly used & avoided terms within the Deaf community.”] #Deaf #DeafBlind #DeafDisabled #LateDeafened #HardOfHearing #DeafAwarenessMonth

Today, let's show some love to our Deaf brethren of our society... If you didn't know about this below... Be aware now! Let's all talk about Deaf Awareness by helping us make everyday life more deaf-friendly for children, young ones and people living with full or partial deafness. Deafness and hearing loss can mean different things to different people. People use various words and terms to describe how they view their own deafness or hearing loss. Aims of Deaf Awareness This is all about promoting the positive aspects of living with deafness. It aims to raise awareness of the isolation that deaf people can occasionally experience, and promote the importance of social inclusion around the deaf community. How can I be more deaf aware? . Make sure you have the person’s attention before you start speaking. . Stand or sit in a place with good lighting, so that you can be lip-read. Body positioning is important. Use simple body language and visual cues. . Try to find a quiet place to communicate with little background noise as this can be distracting. . Use your usual voice level. If a deaf person uses a hearing aid it can be very uncomfortable for them and can seem as though you are shouting. . You can write to communicate. . Remember that not all deaf children use sign language to communicate. Find out their preferred method of communication. Some will use speech, some will use BSL, and some may use writing, or a mixture of all these methods. Deaf Awareness Week (6 to 12 May 2024) The aim of Deaf Awareness Week is to raise awareness of communication needs and improve access to services and tools for deaf and hard of hearing people. Tips for communicating with people who are deaf/hard of hearing: - Be face-to-face. - Check the person's preferred method of communication. - Make sure you have the person's attention before you begin speaking. - Make sure the person can see your face clearly. - Make sure the room is well-lit. - Make sure there is no light behind the person speaking (for example, don't stand with your back to the window or the sun). - Speak clearly but don't slow down, shout or exaggerate your speech. - Speak one at a time. - Provide a professional BSL interpreter if this is the person's preference (of course not all deaf people use BSL). - Arrange the seating so that both the clinician and the interpreter are facing the deaf/hard of hearing person. - Speak directly to the deaf/hard of hearing person #communication #hardofhearing #deaf #nhs #inclusivity # #healthcare

My first time attending an event for a Deaf author interview and book signing, using services like CoNavigators for accessibility as a DeafBlind person, was unforgettable. Friday night, October 11th, was one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time! Thank you @deafspotlight! Deaf individuals need both hearing and Deaf interpreters, while DeafBlind individuals require hearing and Deaf interpreters as well as Deaf Co-Navigators. I want to highlight how CoNavigators supported me that evening. This is just the beginning of my journey in using these services and fully accepting that I AM DeafBlind. When they touched my knee, shoulder, hand, or arm, they helped inform me of what was happening. For instance, during an interview between two Deaf individuals, it can be hard for my eyes to keep up with both of them signing simultaneously or taking turns. If interruptions occur, I might miss a comment or question and have to piece things together later. With CN, their gentle touches kept me in sync with the conversation, making it so much easier to stay on track with everyone. That’s when it hit me—I’m DeafBlind. I’m not just Deaf. This is why I want to teach the world about what accessibility should look like for DeafBlind people and they all have different accommodation requirements. ID in comments.

??It's Deaf Awareness Week and I had the privilege of talking with Specialist Teacher of the Deaf Catherine Routley to discuss ways to raise awareness for the deaf community?? ?With over 30 years experience working with young people with auditory processing difficulties Catherine is passionate about being ensuring the needs of the deaf community are met? Here are some of Catherine's tips to raise awareness: - Talk directly to a deaf person. Make eye contact and keep it while you are talking. - Be aware of background noise. Go into a quieter area and ensure music, radio etc. are?turned off. - Speak clearly and do not exaggerate words. - Make sure only one person speaks at a time. - If you are giving specific instructions, ask them to repeat them to ensure understanding. -If you are changing topics in a conversation, let them know this. Don’t assume they are able to switch from one topic easily. #deafawarenessweek #deafawareness #industryinsights #industryinterview #SEND #teacher #interview #schools #education #advice #tips #industryinterview #professional https://lnkd.in/eGSZnEP7

"There is not only one type of deafness, one diagnosis, one cause and only one method that deaf people use to communicate. Deaf and hard of hearing people are very much all individuals with unique circumstances and a mixed bag of life experiences. So don’t assume if you’ve met or worked with one deaf person, that everyone else will be the same... But what isn’t great is assuming we know what someone else needs. So please always ask what a deaf person requires accessibility wise." #DeafAwarenessWeek #Inclusion #Diversity https://lnkd.in/eiKcu3Mr

Deaf Awareness Week Research by the RNID shows that 1 in 5 people are Deaf or have hearing loss. The negative impacts of not being included in the conversation can have huge consequences and result in exclusion. Simple steps to make sure that people are included with communication include: ?? Make sure that you attract the individuals attention with simple gestures. ?? Face the person, they my rely on lip reading. ?? Be patient, you may need to repeat or rephrase. ?? Never say "Oh it doesn't matter." In a work environment ask what adjustments are required, for instance, is a BSL interpreter. There are some great captioning software applications that come as part of Microsoft Teams and GoogleMeet - technology can help to bridge the barrier to ensure that everyone is included. If you post videos and podcast always provide captions or transcripts so that everyone can enjoy your content. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower offers a way to begin conversations about inclusion, find out more by visiting our website https://bit.ly/3JVe0b7 ALT: Text reads: Deaf Awareness Week. 6 May to 12 May 2024. This week (6-12 May 2024) is Deaf Awareness Week. At least 12 million adults in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss. Sadly over the last year, two thirds of the deaf community have experienced negative attitudes from others. It's time to change this! British Sign Language was recognised as a language in its own right in 2003 and legally as an official language of Britain two years ago. Document Direct work in partnership with Sign Solutions who enable communication between Deaf and Hearing People providing on-demand and around the clock interpreting, training and translation services nationwide, enabling Deaf people to communicate more effectively and gain equal access to information, products, services, education and work. This year focuses on raising awareness of the inclusivity needs of the deaf community. We can all play our part to be more deaf aware, both at work and in daily life. #deafawarenessweek #translation
