Deaf Counseling Center的动态

Telling someone “you don’t look Deaf” might be intended as a compliment, but it can actually come across as invalidating the Deaf person’s identity and experiences. It suggests there’s a specific way a Deaf person should look, overlooks diversity within the Deaf community, and reinforces stereotypes. To a Deaf person struggling with internalized audism, this type of comment only serves to reinforce the idea that “passing” for hearing is the goal. To a Deaf person struggling to fit into the Deaf community because of less-than-fluent ASL skills due to early language deprivation, this comment can trigger feelings of rejection and being an outsider.
