Being in a Pre-Election Period as a civil servant means that I am very limited in terms of work-related posts I can make (not that I post that regularly anyway!). While I'm hoping there will be updates to make and publications to shout-out in the months following the election, I thought I would take the opportunity to shout-out a personal project my wife and I have been working on. We're both very passionate and enthusiastic about raising money for cancer charities - aside from a few (COVID-19 related) blips, we've done something to raise money every year that we've been together. This year is no exception: We've already done a Race for Life for Cancer Research and we're doing the MacMillan Mighty Hike in a few weeks for MacMillan Cancer support, and will be doing the Ealing half marathon in September. Cancer Research and MacMillan both do amazing work to find and implement new treatments and support people who are battling cancer. Reading our fundraising page there are some statistics on cancer treatment that I hope highlights that, although cancer treatment today is incredibly advanced, there is never room for complacency and a lot of this progress relies on fundraising. And that fundraising relies on everyone else's kindness and willingness to give for a greater cause. If anyone is feeling a stirring need to donate to a great cause, has some spare cash as we approach pay-day, or wants to justify what is turning out to be some quite intense training on our part, please consider contributing on the below link! https://lnkd.in/ecx9Yc2W

Cancer. Breast cancer. What a terrible, unforgiving disease. There are plenty of cancers and terrible other diseases that also need attention. But this is one I am personally touched by, and it is cruel to see. The statistics are staggering, and until impacted it's very easy to forget or not realise. I myself become complacent and forget when the medication is working. You forget about the amazing advancements in medicine, science and innovation. And you forget about the lobbying efforts needed to get this medicine on the PBS. We forget, but the patient doesn't. It's time to become less complacent and act to try make a difference, no matter how small. There are already a number of fantastic support networks, such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., the Breast Cancer Network Australia and in particular Dreams2Live4 - who provide unique support to adults. These all-need support too, to keep supporting loved ones. This weekend, like many years past, I will be running the Mother's Day Classic Foundation Fun Run in support of my sister who is battling Metastatic Breast Cancer. It's a very small gesture, but I would appreciate any support through donations in the link below, to support her, and to help fight this terrible disease. This is just the start, because it is never too late to do your part in supporting others. ? 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. ? About 1 in 500 men are diagnosed in their lifetime. ? Around 1000 young women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about 3 young women each day. ? In 2023, over 3,200 Australians passed away from breast cancer (including 30-40 males). ? Approximately one woman under the age of 40 is expected to die each week from breast cancer. That’s 9 Australians a day dying from the disease. ? In the last 10 years, breast cancer diagnosis have increased by 21%.

Leveraging drones, spatial data, and storytelling to advance global health, environmental, and humanitarian efforts.
Let's take a moment to talk about → PINK WASHING Did you know that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer? Assuming half of my followers are women, that is over ONE THOUSAND of you. And yet, there is still no cure for metastatic breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and over the course of the month companies from around the world plaster their products in pink ribbons. Unfortunately, only a tiny percentage of the "pink" profits actually go to supporting breast cancer related causes and of that only 2-5% go to stage 4 research. The breast cancer community wants to change this. I am a carrier of the BRCA2 gene mutation, which gives me up to an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and 30% chance of developing ovarian cancer (as well as a whole suite of other not-so-fun cancers) in my lifetime. My great-grandmother had breast cancer. My grandmother had breast cancer. My great aunt had breast cancer. And my aunt had breast cancer. And my dad, who passed the mutation to me, developed a rare form of peritoneal cancer and passed away in less than three months. When I had my first breast cancer scare at 25, I made the difficult decision with my doctors to have a preventative double mastectomy. And while I've been able to stay cancer-free, I know I'm one of the lucky ones. While I love the increased awareness for this disease that will impact so many of us, I want to encourage you to be thoughtful about where your donations go. If you or your organization are planning on making a donation this month (which, I hope you do!), I hope you will consider donating to organizations that either directly impact the breast cancer community or fund stage 4 research. If you're looking for a good place to donate, I highly recommend donating to The Breasties Stage 4 Research Fund (link in The Breastie's Profile): https://lnkd.in/ewdDFN55 Know someone impacted my breast or gynecological cancer who could use a little extra support? The Breasties is an all-inclusive nonprofit organization that creates community for survivors, previvors, stage 4 thrivers, and caregivers impacted by breast and gynecologic cancers. This organization has impacted my life in so many ways and I've had the opportunity to meet-up and connect with breasties all over the world. If there was ever a silver-lining to any of this, it's that I get to part of this incredible community and chocked full of all the best people I know. Learn more at their website here: https://thebreasties.org/ https://lnkd.in/eEdq3QYk
The Breasties? on Instagram: "When @trish_newyorkcity started Reclaim October, she knew that she wanted to help the cancer community take back the narrative by amplifying charities that are truly making a difference within the community. The Breasties are thrilled to work alongside Trish to amplify organizations and change-makers. We firmly believe in the power of coming together. We are inspired
