As delighted and excited as I am to read about the hugely ambitious and important ￡550M redevelopment plan announced by the Natural History Museum yesterday - especially the revival of the Origins Gallery and The Herbarium - it also brings into sharp focus the massive imbalance that still exists between North and South... and even 'London and the rest'. As a culture sector fundraiser, I have to admit that my eyes went out on stalks when I read that FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY MILLION figure. Oof. That's some target. I then read that 75% of the budget has already been committed - by the government. That leaves ￡150M to raise in 7 years (in time for the museum's 150th birthday), eminently achievable for an organisation with NHM's connections and network - and such an ambitious and dynamic leader to pull the levers of influence. Along with the major projects at the newly renamed London Museum, the British Museum's possible ￡1billion redevelopment and the V&A expansion... that's a whole lot of investment (including a decent chunk of public funds) in London's cultural institutions. And a lot of philanthropy will follow those government pounds to the capital. Meanwhile in the North... we have incredible museums, galleries and heritage venues that are struggling, with crumbling buildings, leaking roofs and also working hard to delivery extraordinary public experiences on challenging (and, in real terms, diminishing) budgets. It's a lot to juggle. And at the same time the fundraising-sphere is more competitive than ever. While not begrudging London in any way, it does trigger a 'but where's our share?' response. Ten years ago I was working at MOSI in Manchester (now Science and Industry Museum) when we secured ￡3M from the Treasury to help us realise the vision for a new temporary exhibitions gallery. That felt massive at the time - the height of the Northern Powerhouse agenda - but is dwarfed by these current projects and investment. Think about what ￡40million - just 10% of that NHM government pledge, and nearly double the most recent ACE MEND capital programme - could achieve if distributed across the major - and most in need - cultural venues of Liverpool, Manchester, Bradford, Leeds and Newcastle. Let's hope that announcement will follow shortly... but I won't hold my breath.

$75 million can go a long way to train and employ the chronically unemployed and prevent or end their homelessness. It can work wonders in research to improve the cognitive health of seniors, and be put to work to end the trafficking of children. I believe that it is time for charitable foundations to review their priorities and to consider reprioritizing their funding to have greater positive impact on improving the human condition. I am not suggesting that "The Arts" are not important and worthy of support. They are! But consider this... Those who are jobless, poverty stricken, homeless, suffering with Alzheimer's or another life-altering condition are not likely to enjoy museums and The Arts. I believe that this is the time to reprioritize! I do understand that many foundations are structured with guidelines and funding priorities set in place by their founding donor(s). Even then, many of these foundations can find and encourage programming that improves access to those who are dependent on vital human services. How about funding for entry fees and bus transportation for families and individuals wanting to visit and benefit from museums and other nonprofit arts and historical institutions? #charitablefoundations #nonprofits #humanservices #foundationgrants #grants

Fascinating piece in The Art Newspaper looking at the changing attitudes to philanthropy, as a generational shift unfolds for Art Galleries and Museums. The next generation of donors want to tackle big global challenges- and see their investments deliver big impact and clear outcomes. As a sector, the arts needs to get better at communicating how our work strengthens social cohesion, improves health outcomes and encourages critical thinking and civic responsibility. Julia Halperin talks of "the Great Wealth Transfer", as over the next 20 years in the U.S., more than 1,000 baby-boomer billionaires will pass $5.2 Trillion (how may zeroes in a Trillion?!) on to their children.
