Personally I still remain opposed to the redevelopment of Lowesmoor Wharf for the following reasons : 1) Knocking down the Vesta Tilley Building : where the Internatiinally renown artist performed & why the building is so named. What other City would stand-by & allow the destruction of our History ? 2) Forced relocation of Worcester Foodbank - currently ideally located at the heart of the City. 3) The destruction of the Lowesmoor Community. this has become the heart of our diverse Communities & with it comes Cultural exchange. 4) Why build yet more unwanted Retail Units 10 minutes walk from the High Street that is already struggling to survive ? 5) Overall the rest of the proposals are reasonable, providing the Engine Works home of the 1882 Worcestershire Exhibition, remain & is sympathetically restored. https://lnkd.in/gcTt4Qja

American urbanist William?Hollingsworth "Holly"?Whyte?Jr., in the early 1980s, spoke three words at a Pittsburgh lecture that shaped my life's work. "People," Whyte said, "attract people." That simple guidance informed me as I wrote the first article on the future of Pittsburgh's riverfronts (1986) and instigated the idea of continuous riverfront access as a co-founder of Friends of the Riverfront (1990). It later informed my writing of Tom Murphy's four-part policy Red Book (1993)?and my participation in the Forbes Field II Task Force (1996) that envisioned PNC Park. The Urban Land Institute's recent Downtown Revitalization report to Point Park University presents an either/or fallacy of choosing between downtown as a Central Business District or a Central Neighborhood District. Elements of each will be required. Like many aspects of life, short-sighted profit motives often steer investments in high-end downtown housing, neglecting the needs of middle- and low-income participants. Downtown Pittsburgh thrived when all could enjoy the simple pleasures of Jenkins Arcade and Candy-Rama. Buried in the ULI's 71-slide deck are three simple words that honor William Whyte's legacy. "Remove (the) invisible wall." While the ULI sees the wall as the separation between the university and the universal, broad economic participation is the greater barrier. Somewhere between the extremes of haute couture?and street-hustled vendor goods lies the economic mortar (produce from GC Murphy's New Diamond Market and Nicholas Coffee peanuts) that long glued downtown Pittsburgh together. https://lnkd.in/eKBTGr8R

How do you create a unified master plan design navigating various property interests??? At the heart of Orange County lies the Civic Center in Santa Ana, surrounded by a rich and diverse history. However, the Civic Center itself, with its mix of city, county, state, and federal properties, presents a unique challenge due to complex ownership arrangements. TCA was tasked with delineating a vision to leverage underutilized land and create a harmonized concept for the center of the Civic Center, resulting in a concept centered around a centralized plaza/park, serving as a focal point for all Civic Center uses. ?? ??♀? ??? #masterplanning #design #concept

Are you aware that Millennium Park is celebrating its 20th birthday this weekend, meaning many Chicagoans remember it before it transformed into the 24.5-acre gem it is today? The big picture: One who remembers is Ben Campney, a former city employee who photographed the construction. Flashback: Before it was green space, a pavilion, a fountain and home of "The Bean," it was a big parking lot and old railyard. Catch up fast: Millennium Park opened July 17, 2004. Construction started in 1998 and includes designs by major artists and architects. Frank Gehry designed the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and BP Bridge; Anish Kapoor created Cloud Gate (aka The Bean) and Jaume Plensa designed Crown Fountain. -With the parking garages below, Millennium Park became the largest green roof in the world. -It was the dream project, and a crowning achievement, of Chicago's longest serving mayor, Richard M. Daley. By the numbers: Building Millennium Park ended up costing $490 million, in a mix of public and private dollars. -$270 million came from city parking revenue bonds and tax dollars. -$220 million was from donors, foundations and corporations. Zoom in: Campney worked in Chicago's Public Buildings Commission (PBC) and was sent to the construction site twice a month to document progress to show the mayor. -"He loved Millennium Park," Campney tells Axios. -The only thing that's noticeably aged is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Campney tells Axios after his recent visit to the park. -The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and private contractors Harston/Schwendener started construction in 1998. Walsh Construction took over as general contractors, and PBC replaced CDOT in 2001. #chicago #history #park #city #amusement

Sometimes your limitations can be your strengths. Sometimes the old can be the new. Sometimes the challenge is the solution. One of these examples in my work came in the form of an old power pole. In 2014, Runway Group was working on an adaptive reuse project in downtown #Bentonville at the site of a former lumber yard. On the site there was a 63-foot tall pole that was an eye sore and in the way of future plans. The pole was giant and "grandfathered" into the building so in my mind it had trapped value as something other than just a pole, but what could it be? The idea for the redevelopment was to have a multi-tenant space that would ultimately house multiple hospitality and retail offerings. The building was just far enough from the town square that we feared customers wouldn't consider it part of the growing downtown scene. What could we do? Insert creativity I lobbied to keep the pole and turn it into a beacon for the project. With 63 feet of space, it certainly could stand out and if done right be an icon for the development to rally around. This led me to engage with local artist Dayton Castleman to create a concept using the pole. This ultimately led to the creation of the "Three Feathers" neon arrow. The project was one of the first public art pieces and ushered in a whole new era of iconic neon pieces that the town is becoming known for. The old pole acted as a catalyst for reimagining what could be, and in turn, encapsulated the very core of the project's adaptive reuse vision of taking the old and forgotten and turning it into the new and the unforgettable.
