Report: Career Fair Date: 31-05-2024 Host: Emmanuel High School Speaker: Sir David ___________________________ Good Day Captains of Industry and Members of the Academic Fraternity. Yesterday (31-05-2024) l had the privilege of speaking at the Career Fair hosted by the legendary Emmanuel High School in Harare. As always, l reserved some few notes for you - since you were not present to interface my presentation and l want you to benefit as well. The theme for the program was centric around the subject matter of developing an ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET. Now, before l even delve into my presentation, please allow me to give a few credits to the hosts. Dear countrymen...I witnessed heaven on earth! I saw learners with a resemblance of Havard professors. They were all clad in a professional regalia so much that you would mistaken them for millionnaires - even though they are! Equally charming was their disciplinary conduct. You could not walk a step without receiving a warm gesture of pure respect from the shining students who seemed to have every reason to ignore you - but instead chose humility. I realise it would be grossly unfair to overlook this wonderful reception l received and not recommend someone to this USD $1800 institution- 0773644502. Concerning my presentation l talked about Entrepreneurial Habitudes, dispelling myths surronding the misconception that Entrepreneurship is a monopoly of students from Business Studies. I explained that the subject matter extends to Engineers, Lawyers, Pastors and everyone, and that no one should discriminate against themselves unless of course they choose to belittle themselves. I talked about the liability of Entrepreneurship, which in its very sense entails problem solving and the upgrading of human welfare to comfortabilility. Addressing the various schools of thought concerning Entrepreneurship (Risk Takers, Opportunists, Problem Solvers) l emphasised more on becoming 'Problem Solvers' and discouraged against becoming an 'Opportunist' since an 'opportunist' can exploit any 'opportunity' even at the expense of his customer's innocence. Scaling down my presentation, l challenged learners to confront problems armed by the resource of their education. I implored them to hold themselves accountable for the wellbeing and perfomance of their families and immediate surroundings. Aspirant lawyers, l said, should be on look-out and guard after the oppressed. I explained that it is gross incompetance for them to pay a blind eye to unsual traits within their immediate surroundings (peadophile, GBV...) and not evoke their classroom knowledge to fight the vice. Icing the cake - I said that Entrepreneurship is all about offering a valuable and meaningful service - because 'the greatest among you shall be your servant' just as Scripture says - and in this case we the entrepreneurs are the service providers! Would you consider participating in our 2024 Career Day on Wednesday, November 6th at Elkhorn Area High School? Career Day includes presentation sessions in the morning followed by a College and Career Fair during the lunch hour. Our students consistently share this experience as one of their top favorite days of the school year. Morning Presentations: Careers, Post-Secondary Programs and Employment Students participate in a series of 30-minute sessions. In our career-focused sessions, students learn about different careers, including the nature of the work, important skills, and required training (such as education, job training, and certifications), and have the opportunity for a Q&A session. It is beneficial to include advice on how students can begin developing skills relevant to the career path while in high school. We also offer post-secondary presentations (apprenticeship programs, technical college, 2 and 4 year college programs) as well as employment presentations (resume, interview, and job search information). Presenters will engage with 2-3 small groups of students during the morning rotations. *Presentation options include: Individual Presentation (individual speaker or representatives from one organization) OR Panel Presentation (join a panel of representatives from a similar field) College and Career Fair Held in our gymnasium following the morning presentations, this traditional style fair is another way to connect with students and share information about your business or employment opportunities. At the Career Fair students are invited en masse to visit the fair and interact with participants. Each participant will have a small table to set out materials. Engagement at this event is influenced by connections made during the morning presentations resulting in a more positive experience for all. If you can attend our Career Day as a presenter and/or with a display at our College and Career Fair, please fill out our 2024 EAHS Annual Career Day - Participant Interest form to indicate your interest and receive additional details about the day. #careerfair #volunteerswanted #careers #hiringevent https://lnkd.in/gpQU2rAC

In college, I volunteered to run our campus-wide career fair. It was a long-standing, annual event produced by my student group. And I made it a failure. How? I started my planning by looking at the income statement for the event. I saw that the revenue came entirely from selling booth sponsorships. Because the event was the primary fundraiser for my student group, my main goal was to bring in as many sponsors as possible. Each day, my fellow organizers and I would outbound to the prior year's sponsors and new targets. Before long, we outdid the topline of every other year we had on record. Victory! Then, the day of the event came. The sponsors set up their booths, we flung open the doors, and *crickets*. There was no traffic. The student side of the "marketplace" didn't show up. And that was entirely because I focused on the wrong goal. There were MANY complaints that I fielded from sponsors. Considering that this was an established event with many sponsors participating year after year, my short-term focus could have jeopardized the future of the fair. The next year, I volunteered to run it again. I wanted to fix my mistake. Since no one else volunteered to manage the project, I was 'it'. That second year, I rethought the purpose of the event. The real goal was to bring together students and recruiters in a temporary community. It was a marketplace where sponsors could present their company's career path. And students could pitch their skills, experience, education, and more. The second time around we retained most of the sponsors, but lost a few who felt burned. Those that we kept -- and the new ones that we brought on -- were swayed by the renewed focus: on meeting the students they wanted to recruit. We looked at the sponsors: several accounting associations, multiple engineering firms, insurance companies, a student painting company, and twenty-five others. We blanketed the accounting, economics, engineering, and other relevant departments with posters, flyers, and more to ensure students knew about the event. We highlighted which companies would be there so the students could prepare. The day of the event came. We opened the doors again, and there were crowds of students waiting to meet their future employers. Prepared with resumes, many dressed to impress. The sponsors were buzzing and the students were excited. Instead of focusing on the short-term revenue goal, I needed to focus on the needs of the end customers: the sponsors and the students. I needed to realize that this community needed to be supported, not simply harvested. Otherwise, a short-term boost in revenue could have led to a long-term loss as sponsors and students turned away.

Our school's career fair happened 2 weeks ago, but since then, the local magazine -- THAT's Guangzhou -- graciously wrote a piece on it! https://lnkd.in/g7CdmN5g Interviewing for this piece made me reflect on how my role as a college counsellor shouldn't necessarily only be to advise students on their university and course choices but be able to provide signposts for them in their long-term journey (in the spirit of Rachel Doell's thoughtful piece on 'future pathways advisor' https://lnkd.in/gUwF5RiZ). And sometimes the college vs career counsellor perspective can look very different. Take course choice for example. As a college counsellor, how to help students make the 'right' course choice seems of paramount importance to me. However, when I have the careers counsellor hat on, what becomes salient is the fact that career development is not necessarily linear, and that many (if not most) individuals are embarking on a career that is quite different from what they studied back in university. The careers fair was a great opportunity because it wasn't me rambling about these points to students but for successful leaders in industries to tell them directly that: - Career development is not necessarily linear; it's okay and rather common to steer away from your university major - Success comes in many forms; what is successful to others may not be success to you - Failures are inevitable; work hard but don't be afraid to make mistakes - Don't be afraid to chase your dreams It is admittedly hard to juggle both hats of college and careers counseling -- but the career fair was a good reminder for me that it's important to allocate time and resources into expanding the definition of my role, and supporting students in their journeys well after university. #careercounselling #collegecounselling #studentadvising

?? FMF Career Fair- 2024: A Journey of Dreams and Opportunities ?? The recently completed FMF Career Fair at the Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo was a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who participated. It was a day filled with excitement, hope, and endless possibilities as our talented students embarked on their journey toward building fulfilling careers. From the moment the doors opened, the atmosphere was electric. Booths from numerous esteemed companies, both big and small, were set up, ready to meet our eager students. The fair was not just a platform for job opportunities but a space where students could network, gain insights, and gather invaluable advice from industry experts. We were thrilled to witness our students engaging confidently with potential employers, showcasing their skills, and seizing the opportunities presented to them. Their determination and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. A special thank you goes out to the organizing committee whose hard work and dedication made this event possible. The meticulous planning, coordination, and effort they put in were evident in every aspect of the fair. It was heartwarming to see our community come together to support the future leaders of tomorrow. In the words of one of our students, "The FMF Career Fair was a turning point for me. It opened doors I never knew existed and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams." As we reflect on the success of this event, we are filled with pride and optimism. The future is bright for our students, and we are committed to continuing our support as they navigate their career paths.
