Is the impact of the Springboks’ Bomb Squad measurable? Where do the Boks sit in comparison to other tier-one nations, in terms of their performances in the all-important fourth quarter? How do these performances shape the results of big Tests? I found myself pondering these questions and more after watching the England v New Zealand game last week. Both teams have had their problems in the fourth quarter, and in the end, England finished scoreless in this period for the third time against the All Blacks in 2024. So I did some digging. Points and tries scored, points and tries conceded, across all four quarters, in every match featuring two tier-one nations this season. Some of the findings were surprising, other less so. The Boks have been a strong fourth-quarter outfit for the past six years. This season, however, they’ve been among the most proficient first-quarter teams, and that has to be one of the reasons for their ongoing success (eight wins in 10 matches, seven of those against tier-one nations).
