Breathe. Yes, the country is tense and many people feel fear, me included. I want to say two things: 1) of course you feel fear — you are not alone; and 2) I want to share why I have hope and faith in the long-run. Hear me out. We have been through a lot over the last 230 years. There has been progress and backlash. Progress and backlash. Backlash and progress. And here's the thing: if I had a choice of when to live it would be *now.* And if I had a choice of where to live it would be here in the U.S. So, yes, there is much to be concerned about in the economy, in unemployment in the tech and media sectors, in our fractured politics, in the culture wars, in attacks on various communities, and in and around AI. But I also have long-term faith in the American people and the best of what this country stands for. I also feel an obligation to support those left behind in this moment. For example, anyone in tech who has benefited from this industry over the last 30 years – who was lucky to get in early – shares that obligation with me and should be helping us at Phyl dot org (or they should create something else for the many facing a very difficult job search). There's an old slogan from 100 years ago: don't mourn, organize. There are *infinite* creative ways we can all organize, and build new kinds of communities and institutions that support and move humanity forward. We are attempting to make a modest contribution at Phyl dot org – to build a community to support anyone laid off or let go. But there is so *much* more creative capacity untapped right now. That is part of what gives me faith in the long-run. We have yet to see all the amazing things that billions of humans are going to create. But fear blocks creativity. So let's breathe together. Let's support each other. And let's be sure to never let any one of us walk (or fear) alone.
