Here’s 10 things I’ve learned moderating 10 round table discussions in the #metaverse: 1. People are craving new modalities to connect & consume content - good luck competing with Dax Sheppard of Joe Rogan - the metaverse is piquing the interest of speakers & audience members 2. The office has given serendipity a bad name - virtual worlds are providing a new frontier to have “before, after and in-between moments” 3. In the metaverse, you can be who you want, both virtually and in person - design your avatar how you want and allow your In-Real-Life body to be comfortable without having to worry about being visible 4. Immersive virtual experiences are both a throw-back and a flash forward - without having to worry about someone’s physicality, you can focus deeply on their words, all while having the feeling of being together (this isn’t achievable on Zoom & provides a very useful alternative to in-person when considering the friction/trade-offs) 5. The metaverse is a new frontier for events & gatherings - many are starting to scrutinize their impact and are questioning the utility of in-person - virtual worlds will both augment AND disrupt 6. The #DEI opportunities within virtual worlds are off the charts - all of the power dynamics melt away when participants embody themselves as avatars, and as these spaces are often communal, psychological safety & implied social contracts are the baseline 7. Early adopters of virtual worlds embody the EXACT opposite traits portrayed - it is NOT a Zombie apocalypse of basement-dwelling “losers” - some of the most inspiring, empathetic, and curious people out there are exploring these spaces - they are building a future of global connectedness 8. Sharing supplemental content such as videos or text is better portrayed in a virtual world than on Zoom - the feeling of absorbing the content “together” (as would be the case in-person) is far more immersive 9. Engagement levels are infinitely better than Zoom and even MANY in-person formats - the chat is far more lively than a webinar, participants emote their feelings, and because it’s a novel method of connecting, people choosing to participate are inherently more invested 10. It’s way more fun than Zoom and even in-person - in the metaverse, you get the chance to be silly & learn with the brightest minds - having global access to the best hearts & minds can be far more compelling than the same local access I’m gonna drop 10 things I’ve learned about moderation in the comments?? & I’m gonna drop some resources to get involved with our Inspired People, Inspired Places event series?? as well! While we are a LONG way from interoperable, persistent virtual worlds, what we have today is game-changing for the corporations. Here’s a video that explains more about what we are doing with Inspired People, Inspired Places: https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/dave-cairns-5644a233_metaverse-work-education-activity-7067944987388203010-xVPP?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios
Here’s an article by Dr. Gleb Tsipursky where he was kind enough to name drop our event series! https://www.forbes.com/sites/glebtsipursky/2023/07/23/the-metaverse-offers-a-new-frontier-for-hybrid-and-remote-work/?sh=691561362a34
I was a sceptic ?? about all things Metaverse and avatars etc….. (old dog, new tricks ??) But I leaned into my insecurities and agreed to be a panellist and I really enjoyed it. Really quickly, I forgot about “how different” it was - probably because it was so easy. I’m very happy to have been encouraged to do this session by the wonderful Dave Cairns ?? I will definitely do it again ??♂?
As I continue to grow up I realise more and more Dave Cairns that it’s important to check ones own first though on a matter and to “hold space to be open” to things we don’t yet fully understand. I’m going to hold space for the Metaverse, I just don’t know enough for now.
That tech set up looks crazy!
Dave Cairns?Fascinating insights! The metaverse is reshaping connection and collaboration.?
#6 sounds like a very interesting prospect. Thanks for sharing!
I say what needs saying about the Future of Work/Living. I also help teams coordinate remote & in-office Kadences (pun intended, it’s where I work and what we do!).
1 年1. Having a repeatable format for your conversation is KEY 2. Opening the conversation with a monologue that invites dissent/disagreement is KEY 3. Using humour, emotion & real-life stories is KEY 4. Leaving yourself open to change the structure of your conversation leading up to the day (and during the chat) is KEY 5. As an add-on to #4, being in constant preparation mode is KEY and active listening during the convo is KEY 6. Having a causal dynamic with your event team & participants is KEY (make it feel like a gathering at the community BBQ pit, as it were…) 7. Remembering that it’s NOT about you is KEY 8. Remembering that it’s to be expected that the moderator is not meant to be the subject matter expert is KEY (ignorance is bliss as long as you remain curious) 9. Getting feedback from your die-hard fans is KEY (by example: our audience members prefer speakers not to put their real faces on our video screens as they find it distracting OR our audience hasn’t liked our sessions with 3 speakers as much as with 2 speakers as it’s harder to go deep with 3 vs. 2) Gratitude is KEY (moderation is an incredible skill - building/stewarding a narrative while pulling authentic responses out of guests is a life skill worth learning!)
