When at Novartis, Marc Boutin did a phenomenal job building a powerhouse Patient Engagement team. Voices and dialogue like this are what we need to transform a healthcare system that prioritizes the patient. The challenge now is ensuring these teams remain sustainable and valued internally, especially amidst the constant reshuffling and restructuring that seems to endlessly plague #advocacy and #patientengagement. Stronger investment in these functions means a stronger, more patient-centered, value-based system of care. I can only imagine how insightful this discussion was!
Marc Boutin led a fantastic discussion about the next era of patient (& survivor & caregiver) engagement here at the Milken Institute Future of Health Summit. A few themes: - people with lived experience should be part of question formation, clinical trial protocol reviews, and discussions about treatment targets - regarding a mandate to engage patients: in any other industry we would not need a mandate to focus on customers - patient-generated data and community-led research are essential resources for science (Patient-Led Research Collaborative and other Long Covid patients got a specific shout out) - we need to shift from a “check the box” culture of patient engagement to a recognition of the value people with lived and loved experience bring to biomedical innovation

New article in Nature Portfolio of Prof. Stephen Gilbert et al. explores the environmental opportunities and challenges associated with Hospital at Home (HaH) compared to traditional hospital care. As healthcare faces rising costs and environmental pressure, HaH offers care at home through virtual, in-person, or hybrid models. While studies focus on patient outcomes and costs, its environmental impact remains underexplored. The authors are calling for more research to fully understand its potential co-benefits. #Sustainability #HospitalAtHome #EnvironmentalImpact

What is more important to you - your health or your environment? Maybe you see these things as linked. What if new health delivery concepts can be developed and delivered to provide 'greener care'? A 'win, win'. To what extent is this possible? It's wonderful to hear good news as we leverage technology to enhance healthcare. The Digital Medicine Society (DiMe), in collaboration with The Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Critical Path Institute, has expanded its Library of Digital Measurement Products to include innovative tools specifically for Parkinson’s disease research and clinical care. This open-access library aims to streamline the discovery and use of evidence-based digital tools, enhancing our ability to monitor symptoms and improve patient outcomes. With the addition of these resources, researchers and clinicians can benchmark progress in Parkinson’s against other therapeutic areas, ultimately driving faster and more effective treatments. As we continue to explore the potential of digital health technologies, I encourage everyone in the field to engage with these new tools and contribute to advancing care for those affected by Parkinson's disease. https://lnkd.in/dywiXNvC #SmartHealth #DigitalHealth #ParkinsonsDisease #Innovation #Research #HealthcareTechnology
