We do SO much more than DCAM! (part 2 = Data Strategy top tips) Last week I posted about Ortecha being a global leader known for helping clients with DCAM Data Capability Assessments, Data Capability Uplift and DCAM Training, and I listed our key services. From here on, I'll do a series of posts over the next few weeks, delving into each of our key services. ?? I'll give you my perspective on this aspect of data/data management and the best practice around it. Today, it is... ?Data Strategy My advice is: ?? #1: Choose the right firm/supplier - if you want global experience and exposure with a (perceived) depth of market knowledge and research (e.g. what are all the global asset managers doing) then you should probably go to a Big 4 firm. They (in theory) will have this depth of market knowledge (please REALLY check that they do) and should be able to align your strategy to what everyone else is doing. BUT BE CAREFUL! Do you really want to copy everyone else or do you want a data strategy that aligns to YOUR business strategy? Do you want specific data value aligned to your business goals or just be a beige company copying everyone else? (I know what I want!). - if you want specific data expertise and knowledge that will help you tease out specific aspects of your business strategy and align them to data goals, with a realistic roadmap for value realisation, then you'll likely get a better result by working with a specialist data firm (a good one is Ortecha (wink, wink)). ?? #2: Don't geek out - Your data strategy must be aligned to your business strategy. Your data strategy explains how you will achieve your business strategy via improved use of data, analytics and insight (and yes, the data aspects of AI are bundled in analytics and insight!). - Do not get all geeky about metadata, data modelling and root cause analysis. NO ONE CARES! Your data strategy must explain what data is important and how you are going to use this data to achieve your business goals. Defining the best metamodel ever is important but it's not part of your data strategy. (You can get all this geeky stuff sorted if you do a Data & Analytics Operating Model, which I'll cover in another post). ?? #3: Don't create shelfware This sounds so obvious but it happens so often. Beautiful PowerPoint slide packs are created and approved. They look amazing! But if they just sit on a shelf you have failed. A strategy must be tracked against what you do every day. And it must be updated regularly (e.g. minor changes quarterly, major changes annually). You MUST treat your data strategy as a living document that guides what you do and is updated to show your progress and success. ? ? What is your BEST top tip on data strategy? ?
