Calling All the Alls: What do #ComputerScience, #DataScience, #AI, #Cybersecurity (not to mention: #DataLiteracy, #AILiteracy, #MediaLiteracy, #FinancialLiteracy) all have in common? All of our efforts will completely fail if we don’t have enough highly qualified educators to teach these (often challenging) ideas to students. Yet with a decade-long decline in teacher workforce entry, we have some serious work to do, or we risk leaving many students and communities behind (just as the digital divide grows exponentially). Erin Mote, Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Pat Yongpradit, and myself have drafted a new national CTA to reinvigorate the teaching profession in the eyes of policymakers and the public. With the many calls for #DigitalFrontierSkills, we need to start treating teaching as the job it already is: prestigious, challenging, critical for the economy, critical for national competitiveness. That’s what other countries do. Regardless of the direction the new administration takes, we are forwarding a number of specific and bipartisan recommendations for U.S. Federal agencies to consider through the Federation of American Scientists #DayOne program. Many of these ideas could be replicated at a state-level (and any of us would be happy to talk with you about how). If you are interested in joining a broader push, please reach out. Huge thank you to Melissa M., Patricia Saenz-Armstrong, and Meghan Grady Serrano for their input and thoughtful ideas on this work. https://lnkd.in/gTpQ6xaD

And no, you can’t automate teaching. Sorry. See the FAQ.

Glad to see this out in the wild! Congratulations!

Georgia began requiring a CS Ed Cert a few years ago. However, most universities here still lack initial cert programs for CS educators. While some offer endorsement programs for existing teachers, the state’s largest educator producer (UGA) has no program and little interest in creating one. I transitioned from industry and had to earn my initial cert through a Math MAT before adding CS cert. Years later, new teachers still face this same path. As a large district, we’ve developed in-house programs to address the gap. Educators can earn initial certification for free while teaching on a provisional, and our STEM residency program lets individuals work alongside teachers for a year to explore teaching. Additionally, we’ve created an in-house CS Endorsement program. These efforts have grown our CS teacher pipeline from about 40 in 2018 to nearly 200 today and helped foster a strong community of CS educators, leading to excellent retention in teaching positions. However, without universities investing in initial certification programs for CS educators, it’s hard to see how we can meet the growing demand created by new graduation requirements from lawmakers. You can’t build a pipeline if the programs don’t exist.
