The flight operations restriction for all DoD V-22 Ospreys (including the Navy CMV-22) now appears confirmed, per Military.com reporting. "The services are barred from flying the controversial tiltrotor aircraft more than 30 minutes away from a suitable airfield to divert to in case anything goes wrong." "Cmdr. Beth Teach, a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces, confirmed to Military.com on Thursday that the restriction was handed down by the V-22 Joint Program Office, part of Naval Air Systems Command, and is a requirement that all the services are following." What exactly does this mean for our Osprey fleet? Is this simply a phased return to full operations? Or does this mean a problem has been identified, but not a solution, and the expectation is maintaining 30 minutes from a divert will allow safe recovery in the expected event this same issue returns? Yesterday, Ukraine attacked a base of the 810th Marine Infantry Brigade of the Russian Navy in Ivanovskoe, Kursk Oblast, just as the marines had assembled to be presented with awards. ? This follows the Christmas day attack on the brigade headquarters, in Lgov (also Kursk Oblast). This attack killed and wounded a number of the brigade’s command staff and was followed up by yet another attack, using Storm Shadow missiles, on New Year’s Eve. ? Ironically, on Boxing Day, it was announced that the 810th Marine Infantry Brigade would rotate out of the front line for some rest and recuperation but they remain within range of Ukraine’s heavy weapons. ? The 810th has been completely destroyed and reconstituted at least 3 times since February 2022 it has also seen two large scale mutinies, both in 2022. The scale of the losses for this single brigade is akin to the type of losses one would expect of a World War 1 unit. It is almost inconceivable in modern warfare.
