Our first #CareerTimeTuesday was a success! Today, DCSD 5th graders had the opportunity to hear about careers in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Architecture, or Construction. Thank you to the SC Department of Natural Resources, Geiger Consulting, SC Forestry Commission, Covered in Cotton, Deputy Chief John Shoemake and Chief Ricky Flowers from Darlington County Fire, Clemson Extension Program, and many more, for sharing your career with our students! Contact Dr. Shannon Flowers if you would like to participate in a future event.

We are pleased to announce that we have nailed down dates and venues for a couple of the major events that we organize each year: the Youth STEAM Summit and the Forest Landowner Conference. ? The STEAM Summit is a great learning opportunity for rising 9th to 12th grade students in our region, as well as their parents, school counselors and educators. STEAM, if you haven't guessed it, stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math. This year's free, one-day session will be held July 25th in Rocky Mount, N.C. It features exhibits and fun, educational and interactive experiences for attendees. ? The Forest Landowner Conference, also free to attendees, is a two-day workshop for woodland owners. It too will be held in Rocky Mount, N.C., this year on October 23 and 24. Forest owners are able to interact with their peers and exhibitors from an array of conservation- and forestry-oriented agencies and NGOs, as well as a few forest product companies. While our program specifically serves woodland owners in 13 counties in northeastern North Carolina, the reality is that many of the folks who own land in our region actually live outside these 13 counties and often outside the state of North Carolina. The conference is open to all of them. ? If one or both of these events holds potential for you, please be sure to Save the Dates! (And help spread the word to family, friends and neighbors.) Within the Events section of our website (link below), we have landing pages dedicated to both of these events. There you can see details and images that will provide a better feel for the events. The landing page for the Forest Landowner Conference also lets you download presentations from last year’s conference, and view six short videos featuring interviews with program partners and participating landowners. ? If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us, either via this account or by way of the contact information you can find on the website. #northcarolina #forestry #stemeducation #conservation #heirsproperty

This is a great idea to begin creating this database and possibly observing how outages have changed over time, including how utilities are starting to collect more details surrounding tree-caused outages.
If you have a tree-caused utility outage report to share, Dr. Greg Dahle would love to hear from you. Thanks to grants from the Utility Arborist Research Fund, Dr. Dahle, Professor of Arboriculture & Urban Forestry at West Virginia University, is working to build out a massive database of utility outage reports that will help us better understand the leading causes of tree-caused utility outages. On the latest episode of Trees & Lines: A Utility Vegetation Management Podcast, Dr. Dahle talks to Tejpal Singh & Philip M. Charlton, Ph.D. about this important research and how UVM professionals can help. #arboriculture #uvm #utilities #education #research?

While the forests are different, this is something we are watching carefully. What do I mean by saying "the forests are different?" Well, we are in a rain forest and a very rural area. This study is being done in a drier climate (with different vegetation) and a more urban area. Currently, many in our area are the rope in a three-way tug-of-war between the USDA Forest Service, the State Fire Marshall's Office, and the insurance companies. The USDA Forest Service owns conservation easements that prevent properties within 1/4 mile of the Rogue River from cutting wild trees (or, technically, even pruning the wild trees). These easements were acquired in the 1970s - before the concept of defensible space had arisen and before the Silver Fire, the Biscuit Fire, the Chetco Bar Fire, the Klondike Fire, the Flat Fire, and the Anvil Fire (six of the 40 or more named fires that have been impacted our area). The State Fire Marshall's Office requires property owners to maintain defensible space. Insurance companies are refusing to write new policies and, in some cases, are indicating a reluctance to renew existing policies - citing wildfire risk as the basis for their decision.
Wildfire researchers from Oregon State University have received $750,000 for multiple projects to bridge a knowledge gap between forestry and engineering regarding how communities are affected by major fire events. The projects aim to advance the science of wildfire risk and resilience while training a new generation of scientists better able to translate research findings into tangible outcomes for communities with a high likelihood of wildfire impact. #Wildfire #BelieveIt University of Melbourne RMIT University University of Adelaide University of Victoria College of Forestry at Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences - Oregon State University National Science Foundation (NSF) https://lnkd.in/ggDsj42H

Associate Professor, University of Canterbury · Higher value forests through breeding and wood science
Teaching tsunami One day you are all happy and relaxed, with plenty of time for cooking dinner of any kind. Three course dinner? No problem! Then, one day, just around the corner comes the start of semester. It is a bit like when one is distracted at the beach, waving hello to a friend or loved one and a sneaky wave tackles us and runs us over without any consideration. On the plus side, I am usually looking for links that could be interesting to first year forestry students. Some times they are about forestry related news, but others are nice implementations of data visualizations that tell an interesting story. That's when I came across this interesting clustering of New York City neighbourhoods grouped by similarity of proportions of street-tree species, done by Kieran Healy (https://lnkd.in/exYJFNa4). Of course one thing leads to the next until I got to this great New York City Tree Map in which one can get information for nearly 3/4 of a million individual trees. Enough to motivate some students. Zoom in until finding a tree you like. https://lnkd.in/eUeNfT8C #teaching #academia
