This is a worthy read, even if you’re not from Pittsburgh. Many older industrial cities with strong “eds and meds” have been working hard to translate research assets into quality products, jobs, and enterprises. It requires a diverse network of leaders and institutions to partner and ensure such efforts expand opportunities for all. In short, globally competive innovation clusters don’t just pop up overnight or from the presence of one tech company. Further, federal policies, from R&D to place-based investments and tariff policies, have been critical inputs in shaping these efforts. As Alan Berube and Mark Muro write, voters have an important role to play, too. Their understanding of how federal and state candidates view such policies will shape the future of local economies and American competitiveness. The Paranoid Style in American Politics: An Expanded Version - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gKCagcjp Utilizing Shapiro’s (1965) analysis of the paranoid character style, this paper expands Hofstadter’s (1965) concept of the paranoid style at the social level to include not only suspiciousness and conspiracy thinking, but also assertions of an extreme form of freedom, both of which are exemplified in current socio-political phenomena. The expanded concept is based on an underlying connection between conspiracy thinking and assertions of an extreme form of freedom that Berlin (1997) has termed “freedom from” and Bellah et al. (2002), “radical individualism.” This paper also investigates, theoretically, the relationship between the paranoid character style and the expanded version of the paranoid social style in a way that does not reduce one to the other.

Agree 100%, Andrew. In fact all Albanese Labor should pay back money they have got since March 2022, also super because they have failed to govern so badly. Albanese should not get a after term office staff benefits or travel, because he could not help Australians during his term, so he will definitely not be able to help after his term. Also all property like Albanese’s second hand Cliff house and Wongs second hand ruin should be confiscated and money given back. None of Albanese Labor have earnt one red cent.

One of the powerful intellectual forces behind the Disagree Better initiative has been Yuval Levin at the American Enterprise Institute. In the first year of the Cox Administration, Governor Cox gave each of his senior staff and cabinet a copy of Levin’s 2020 book “A Time to Build” and asked us to read it. We’ve since given out countless copies in lots of settings. I strongly recommend it. I also strongly recommend Levin’s latest book, “American Covenant”. This is one of my favorite passages from the introduction, clarifying that unity doesn’t mean agreement: “A more unified society would not always disagree less, but it would disagree better— that is, more constructively, and with an eye to how different priorities and goals can be accommodated. That we have lost some of our knack for unity in America does not mean that we have forgotten how to agree, but that we have forgotten how to disagree. The parties to our various disputes now tend to talk about each other more than they talk to each other, and so even very active citizens actually spend relatively little time in active disagreement with others, let alone in efforts to overcome such disagreement for the sake of coming to address some common problems in practice.
