Saying I’m proud of my Dad doesn’t quite cut it, but I need to write this & hopefully this LinkedIn post shows just how proud I am! On Monday, my Dad embarks on a 500 mile walk throughout July. The story behind the walk is an important one & I’ve shared it below (as outlined on the Just Giving Page). What makes me so proud? How much of a great example my Dad has set for my two young boys & I. He’s been working so hard to raise money & is up to £3,924 of his £5,000 target. He sets off on Monday & I couldn’t be prouder! Love you Dad! You can see more info & his just giving page here: https://lnkd.in/eq_vD3gK The story behind the walk: Joanne Knowlton lives in Dundee. A beautiful human inside and out , with her whole life ahead of her including a promising career in the police force as a forensic artist. Three years ago at just 29, Jo was diagnosed with MND - her hopes and dreams came crashing down, it was devastating news. With Motor neurone disease, known as MND, messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste, which affects how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. Gradually every part of your body slowly shuts down until you die …it is a life shortening disease and currently there is no cure. MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. There is a 1 in 300 risk of getting MND across a lifetime. It can affect adults of any age, but normally affects people over 50. Why Margate to Dundee ? Mark Knowlton from Margate in Kent thirty years older than Jo, discovered his sister when researching his past 15 years ago - he found out they were both offspring of the same father, a man of multiple marriages and relationships who has since passed. The sense of helplessness you feel seeing loved ones deteriorate slowly and painfully with this horrific diseases is just heart-breaking. But there is hope - The MND Association funds and promotes research that leads to new understanding and treatments and brings us closer to a cure for MND. In the month of July 2024, Mark plans to walk 500 miles - the distance from his hometown in Margate , Kent to where Jo’s lives in Dundee, Scotland to raise funds for much needed MND research. He aims to cover this distance by continuously walking the Viking Coastal Trail, a 32-mile circular trek around the Thanet coast, Minster and Reculver.
