They’ll likely have social engagement components. But a few will successfully tell a story that sticks in your mind like bubblegum. #storytelling makes messages sticky. Flash and famous people catch your attention, but a good story will hold it. It will connect the brand message with the biggest audience of the year. Viral Marketing Stunts Made 'Deadpool' A $1Billion Hit From cameos in K-pop videos to cooking chimichangas with celebrity chefs, movie stars like Ryan Reynolds are trying ever-more unorthodox stunts to reach audiences. It's not just about the traditional trailers anymore. The film industry is evolving. Viral marketing is now at the forefront. It's engaging, memorable, and, most importantly, shareable. 'Deadpool' was a pioneer in this realm. Remember those hilarious holiday greetings and unexpected appearances? They created buzz, drove curiosity, and, ultimately, ticket sales. Brands and marketers should take note. Creativity and boldness can make all the difference. Don't be afraid to step outside the box. You never know what will capture the public's imagination. My husband doesn’t want to hear my marketing rants during the big game, so taking to LinkedIn once again to share my quick thoughts on ads during the Super Bowl. My biggest pet peeve/the biggest mistake I see brands make when it comes to ad spots is relying too heavily on humor, entertainment and celebrity talent, and not tying the creative back to the brand’s product or mission. The reason brands advertise is to create brand awareness. A stage like tonight casts a wide net of potential customers (both net-new and repeat), so to be effective, a brand’s message needs to 1) raise awareness of who they are/what they do 2) build positive sentiment, which is normally done through entertainment value. So far, Popeyes and State Farm are good examples of this. Popeyes used visuals and messaging to communicate their new wings. While I didn’t love the creative, I won’t forget that Popeyes has wings. State Farm’s repetition of “like a good neighbaa” is a great example of using a celeb like schwarzenegger to repeat their slogan over and over. (Remember, it takes about seven times for consumers to be provoked to act). In contrast, T-Mobile’s spot was fun, funny and entertaining with a great cast of celebs but it’s only been a few minutes and I already forget what the point of that ad was. There’s still a lot of advertising to go tonight but I would love to know your thoughts on Super Bowl ads: what are your favorites so far?
