A dancer’s pay in the U.S. is unpredictable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly pay for dancers and choreographers in 2023 was $24.95. But that number belies a wide range of experiences, with pay fluctuating depending on location, career level, and freelance status, among many other variables. All too often, the pay a dancer receives seems less than what their work is worth. As a result, unions and protests have grown in the industry. Dance artists are getting increasingly comfortable demanding more and speaking up about their work conditions. To help paint a picture of the current financial landscape in the industry, four dancers got candid about their typical earnings—and the financial needs and concerns that shape their careers. It's really important to know how to ask for a pay raise from your client for a few reasons. First, when you know what steps to take, you'll feel more confident starting the conversation. Being confident helps you explain why you deserve an increase and stand up for yourself. Plus, if you talk about getting paid more politely and professionally, it keeps your relationship with your clients positive, even if they can't give you the salary increase right away. This shows that you're mature and serious about your work, which can lead to more jobs in the future. So, knowing how to talk about getting paid more shows that you're a professional freelancer who wants fair pay for the great work you do. #freelancerlife?#FreelancingTips?#taxfiling

?? Survey Reveals Impact of SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild Of America, USA Disputes on UK Film & TV Workers ?? A recent Bectu survey sheds light on the profound effects of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA disputes in the US on the UK's film and television workforce: - ?? Nearly 4000 freelancers participated, providing insights into the impact on employment, finances and mental health. This is where the rubber meets the road - where the struggles and sacrifices of our industry professionals are laid bare. - ?? Shockingly, three-quarters of respondents are currently not working, with a staggering 80% directly affected by the US disputes. These aren't just statistics; they're livelihoods put on hold, dreams deferred. - ?? Financial concerns loom large, with 9 in 10 expressing worries about security. Meanwhile, 6 in 10 are grappling with mental health challenges due to job loss and financial strain. - Key findings highlight the stark reality: 35% are grappling with paying bills, 15% resort to loans, and 1 in 10 consider moving in with family due to financial pressures. It's a juggling act of survival. The voices of the survey respondents echo the struggle - "The loss of my job has put great stress and anxiety on my first pregnancy." - "Situations like this cause so much stress financially... The industry was flooded with more work after lockdown, and now there’s no work." - "I’ve spent so long surviving instead of thriving, and I’m tired." Philippa Childs, Head of Bectu, underscores the severity: - ?? Urgent action is needed from government and industry stakeholders to support the freelance workforce and ensure the resilience of the UK's cultural sector. In these challenging times, let's remember our roots, our community, and our resilience. Together, we'll weather this storm and emerge stronger on the other side. While salary transparency is finally gaining momentum in traditional employment, the freelance world still operates largely in shadows. This silence isn't neutral - it actively reinforces existing inequities. The data is striking…gender wage gaps in freelancing aren't just persisting - they're thriving in this environment of secrecy. When we can't openly discuss rates, we can’t address systemic inequities! Transparency is power. Every time we share our rates, every time we discuss pricing openly, we chip away at these disparities. We create benchmarks. We empower others to advocate for their worth. Are you part of the problem or the solution? What would happen if we all started talking about money more openly? --------- Hi! I guess you could say the wage gap widens in mysterious ways. At my current job (a job that isn’t listed on my profile, I would like to clarify), I was initially hired partially because of my copy editing and proofreading skills–something I studied in college and have since been doing professionally on a freelance basis for years. My boss told me a significant part of my role would be taking on editing projects.?Ever since I graduated, I’ve been searching for a job that allows me to use this skill that I love so dearly and am so very proud of. Fast forward a few months into me working this job without being assigned any editing projects. One day I come into work and start chatting with my male coworker, and he tells me that he’s just been assigned a copy editing project…despite the fact that he’s never done a copy edit before and didn’t really know how to go about doing one. This was baffling enough, but then fast forward another couple weeks to when I’m talking with another coworker, who tells me our boss told them that if we can’t come up with some such projects to do, our hours will be cut. And that brings us to today, where I receive my schedule for the following week, and find that I’m only scheduled for a measly 13 hours (instead of the ~30 I was told I would have, back when I was hired). This is far from the first time this sort of thing has happened to me; that’s why I feel compelled to share it in the first place. I once made the tough decision to quit a job doing something that I loved partially because I realized there would be no growth opportunities for me in the role–something made very clear to me after all the Adobe Creative Cloud tasks that I thought I was hired to do (a skill I’ve been developing since high school and one of the reasons I got the job) were given to our only male intern instead without my knowledge (I was a salaried employee–and the interns’ boss). At a student worker job I had in college (where I was in a management position), my bosses/educators denied my request to continue to work remotely while doing a satellite program in another state because I “wasn’t doing enough”--due in no small part to the fact that only a month into my management role, they had started delegating tasks directly to my male deputy, often leaving me completely out of the loop and unable to “do enough” even if I wanted to. The next semester, this deputy was promoted to my old job, and when he began sexually harassing women in our office and was accused of rape by a classmate, can you guess what my former bosses and supposed educators did? Nothing. So thank you, Columbia College Chicago, for teaching me the valuable lesson that it’s better and easier to employ a predator than a woman. Every day I feel crushed by the weight of the fact that if I had simply been trusted to do the jobs I was hired to, I wouldn’t be scraping pennies together and overdrawing my account just to pay my rent every month. #feminism #wagegap #desperate

Your Friday reminder: Free and/or underpaid work is a trap for 2 main reasons: ?It takes time away from finding clients who will value you appropriately. ??It puts you in daily contact with people who fundamentally don’t respect you. You get to decide what a good wage is for you. I’d never judge someone taking on work at a lower rate out of necessity. But! Always consider the opportunity cost of working for cheap. It can get expensive as hell. (This post brought to you by, some jerk on LinkedIn posting about “how dare uppity freelancers not accept my shit wages!” ??)
