As we head into the summer with warmer and drier weather, it's crucial to prepare for natural emergencies such as wildfires, especially as their risk and impact in Northern and Western Canada are on the rise (https://lnkd.in/gk5mYG9A). We wanted to share some valuable lessons learned from our experience during the 2023 Yellowknife Wildfire evacuations. ?????????????????? ????????????????: Create comprehensive security and emergency plans well in advance. Conduct red teaming and tabletop exercises to build memory, ensuring you and your team are confident and can adapt the plan to any situations that may arise. ???????? ????????????????????????: Implement role redundancies and delegate authority in advance for potential scenarios to ensure seamless operations during an emergency. Responsibilities can change quickly during a crisis. ?????????????????? ???????????? ??????????????????????: Build deep relationships with emergency management and government agencies in advance. Understand if you and your provider may need authorization to remain in place during evacuations. Having this in advance is ideal. ???????????????? ??????????????: Maintain a robust pool of resources ready for deployment. ???????????????? ???????????????? ??????????????????????: Clearly define the role of your security provider within your business continuity plan. Ensure that expectations are clear to avoid gaps in service, coverage, or liability issues. *Bonus* ?????????????????????????? ????????????????: Develop a clear communication plan for both internal and external stakeholders. Avoid leaving the community guessing about what is happening or what the response plan is when there is a fire on your doorstep. Preparation is key to effectively managing and mitigating the risks associated with wildfires. Stay safe and stay prepared! Strengthening community resilience: A focus on Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP). We recently hosted a workshop, partnering with Collaborating 4 Inclusion on P-CEP, supporting service providers and emergency response agencies to empower people with specific needs in the Hawkesbury-Nepean floodplain. Led by multi-award-winning researcher and facilitator Michelle Villeneuve, the workshop focused on: ? Self-Assessment: Participants learned to assess their individual and organisational preparedness. ? Flood risk awareness: Applying P-CEP principles to support business continuity and personal preparedness. ? Community Collaboration: Building stronger, more resilient communities. By equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge to take charge of their emergency preparedness, we can create safer and more resilient communities. The event was made possible thanks to prizemoney from the RA’s Hawkesbury-Nepean River Flood Study 2024 FMA-IAG Excellence Award win for Flood Risk Management Project of the Year Floodplain Management Australia. You can find out more about what we’re doing in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley region on our website: https://lnkd.in/gDVgYMXB #NSWReconstructionAuthority #DisasterPreparedness #PCEP

This week qldwater’s CEO Dr Georgina Davis attended the 2024-2025 Higher Risk Weather Season (HRWS) National Preparedness Summit in Canberra. The Summit brought together critical stakeholders from all levels of Australian governments, industry and the not-for-profit sector to explore how we prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.?The Summit also provided opportunity to build qldwater’s networks, make new connections and strengthen existing relationships. For the period 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, Australia experienced 71 declared disaster events which impacted 205 local government areas. This resulted in $6.1 billion in state expenditure under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and a further $52.4 million in support to individuals.? Day 1 of the Summit focused on the national climate outlook, including a seasonal outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).?Afternoon sessions then looked at best practice and emerging themes for response and early recovery. Queensland’s weather outlook indicated a higher probability of above average rainfall, higher than average overnight temperatures and an increased risk of fire.??Tropical cyclone season is still expected to be November to April and BOM will release their cyclone outlook on 8 October.?However, every Queenslander will know that there is increasing volatility in both the climate and its forecasting; and preparedness is key as we never know what to expect as disaster intensities and consequences increase. Day 2 was then expended by the National Preparedness exercise which required teams to consider a series of 2024-25 HRWS scenarios across the season and how the Australian Governments Crisis Management Framework (released during the Summit) applied. Also considered were existing state and local plans and emergency arrangements.?The exercises were designed to test participants with compounding weather events, and novel crises which pushed disaster intensity and consequences to the max.?The scenarios also tested the teams to determine what capacity and capability was available and where that assistance was coming from.? https://lnkd.in/gf7ERHnw

It’s been a big week in Canberra meeting with my new DAFF teammates, and catching up with lots of colleagues from across the disaster management sector at the Higher Risk Weather Season National Preparedness Summit. Thanks to the National Emergency Management Agency team for pulling together such a successful event. My key take-aways: - We’ll ALWAYS be better, and do better for the community if we work together - government, private sector, not-for-profits and most importantly community working in true partnership. The willingness to collaborate was alive and well in the room. - No matter how much we sharpen our preparedness, response and recovery there will ALWAYS be room to improve, and that’s a good thing! As a sector will never stop learning, innovating, and adapting. - Disaster reviews, reports, and events like this week’s will ALWAYS highlight the need for timely, tailored, accurate and accessible crisis communication. Comms is King (I know I’m biased #sorrynotsorry).

Most people aren’t normally worried about disasters until there’s an incoming warning on their local TV programs. By then, it’s often too late to properly prepare. The reality is, disaster management isn’t just about responding to emergencies—it’s about being proactive in all three stages: preparedness, response, and recovery. ? Preparedness – Having the right plans, technology, and infrastructure in place before disaster strikes can mean the difference between chaos and control. ? Response – When an event happens, fast and effective action saves lives, minimizes damage, and ensures continuity. ? Recovery – Long after the headlines fade, rebuilding communities, restoring operations, and improving resilience is critical. That’s why Disasters Expo USA is a must-attend event for anyone in emergency management, public safety, or disaster response. This is where industry leaders, innovators, and decision-makers come together to share solutions, build connections, and ensure we’re ready for whatever comes next. ?? Don’t wait for the next warning—be ahead of the disaster. See you there! #DisasterPreparedness #EmergencyManagement #DisastersExpo
