We have been experimenting with this new weekly news feature as a part of the Transit Unplugged franchise, and I would love to know what types of stories you would like to hear about? ?? ?? It's a short :60-second weekly update on what is going on in the transit/people transport industry ??... targeted at folks who work in the industry, but I also would love to hear from people who might be curious about how decisions are being made regarding how we move people around our communities. ? It's a fascinating industry with lots of interesting problems to solve. ?? So, to my fabulous friends and network... first of all, would you find weekly #transit information interesting or useful? ?? *Content warning: Footage of a real crash Safe System Snippet: Complex Urban Environments: Prioritising Safety Many of our urban areas are built around large, traffic-carrying roads that cut through busy activity centres. These environments have significant challenges, especially when it comes to the safety of vulnerable road users like pedestrians (including skateboarders) and cyclists. The core of this issue is understanding Movement and Place – ensuring that we can move people and goods efficiently while protecting the spaces where people live, work, and play. It’s a complex challenge, made more difficult by the fact that we’ve inherited a network not designed with safety priorities in mind. While we work towards long-term, systemic solutions, we have to acknowledge that education, enforcement, and behaviour change efforts will continue to play a role. However, these are interim measures – they are not sustainable Safe System solutions. Relying solely on these approaches is not enough to achieve the safety outcomes we need. Our responsibility: we must continue to push for vehicle and infrastructure changes that prioritise the safety of our most vulnerable road users. We need to reimagine our urban spaces to reduce conflict between high-speed traffic and active transport. Step in the right direction Although Footway Parking is the subject of much debate at a national level, it's no less of an issue on private land. Vehicles parking on footways impede pedestrians, often forcing them into a road, creating danger to themselves and other road users. On private land extensive footway parking can also suggest a bigger underlying issue. While over-subscribed parking is not uncommon, if it's not properly regulated, or if unauthorised users are not deterred, then the problem spills into other areas - footpaths, grass verges, designated spaces, emergency access routes and so on. How do you deal with a fear of speed bumps? You slowly get over it... ?? It turns out some dad jokes can be profound. In this case, it's a reminder that making meaningful improvements in road safety in the U.S. means moving away from prioritizing speed. When short commute times remain the highest measure of engineering success, the safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs) will continue to be threatened. ?? The City of Cleveland recently launched public engagement for Cleveland Moves – the City’s 5-year multimodal transportation plan. Cleveland Moves will create a strategy that builds on the City’s ongoing work to make it safer, more comfortable, and more convenient to walk, bike, and take transit in the city, including: - Updating the 2007 Bikeway Master Plan to recommend a connected bike network for riders of all ages and abilities for 3-year rapid implementation - Building on the Vision Zero Action Plan by taking a deep dive into bicycle and pedestrian safety issues to identify priority investments to make walking and rolling safer and more comfortable for everyone - Reviewing existing programs and policies and address gaps related to walking, rolling, and riding bikes - Developing the look and feel of the Midway Bikeway Network - Integrating ongoing projects and new recommendations into a 5-year prioritization and implementation plan as required by Cleveland’s 2002 Complete and Green Streets Ordinance Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eUx-Yv4K
