In a way we're all pandemic historians with #Covid19, and will remember the emergence of novel strains such as Delta and Omicron, as well as the havoc that was caused. What's fascinating about Covid-19 is the pace at which novel virus strains continue to cannibalise one another - making those major concerns of the past a near obsolete worry. Each strain will be slightly different from the next, so it's right not to forget Covid-19 is with us, evolving, but crucially the impact can be mitigated with vaccination and timely treatment. Thankfully Moderna and Pfizer have taken up the challenge set by the #FDA to evolve the mRNA vaccines to target the JN.2 strains, and Novavax will continue to develop its Matrix-M? adjuvant technology for the JN.1 strain.
Covid-19 continues to claim around 1,700 lives weekly worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO Director-General, highlighted the worrying decline in vaccine coverage, particularly among health workers and people over 60, who are at high risk. Despite the official end of Covid-19 as an international public health emergency in May 2023, the WHO urges ongoing vigilance, including maintaining virus surveillance, ensuring access to affordable tests, treatments, and vaccines, and encouraging at-risk populations to stay updated on vaccinations.
