Always interesting that the word philanthropy means love (philos think Philadelphia the city of Brotherly Love), and arthropos which means man or humanity. In proportion due to the fact that our philanthropic giving grew by 1.9% does that somehow also mean that our love of our fellow man has increases or decreased? Yes it’s great more people are giving, but sad that more people are also in need. Let’s talk about how we can make sustainable change in communities.

Key findings from Giving USA 2024: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2023 reveal that individuals, bequests, foundations, and corporations donated an estimated $557.16 billion to U.S. charities in 2023. Total giving experienced a 1.9% growth in current dollars, hitting a new high. However, when adjusted for inflation, giving actually decreased by 2.1%, as the inflation rate stood at 4.1%. The positive growth in current dollars was supported by the strong performance of the stock market and GDP, surpassing initial expectations in 2023. Despite the increase, total giving in 2023 has yet to surpass the inflation-adjusted peak achieved in 2021.

In 2023, the philanthropic landscape witnessed a remarkable resilience and recovery, as individuals, bequests, foundations and corporations collectively contributed an estimated $557.16 billion to U.S. charities, according to the Giving USA 2024 report. However, when adjusted for the higher-than-average inflation rate giving declined indicating the growth in total giving did not outpace the rising cost of living.
