The government has introduced new draft regulations to enhance paternity leave legislation, allowing dads or partners more flexibility. Starting from 8th March, they will be able to divide their statutory leave into one-week blocks instead of taking it all at once. What's even better is that this extended leave can be taken at any time within the first year of your child's birth or adoption. And guess what? Time to bring paternity leave into the 21st century. Just signed this petition and encourage others to do the same. ?????? My other half is one of the outliers whose company gave him 18 weeks fully paid pat leave. The bond he now has with our daughter is incredible, and sharing the load of those first few wild months meant I didn't fall into a pit of depression, exhaustion or resentment, as so many new mothers do (understandably). Kids deserve to have their dads around at this formative time, and dads deserve to partake in - and create - it. I'm not a parent. But I, and you, don't need to be, or plan to be, to know the impact paternity leave has on the child, the other parent and society as a whole. I've been a major advocate for better paternity leave - the data supporting it's benefit to society is irrefutable. It's shocking that the UK has the worst paternal leave policy in Europe. Last month, the Paternity Leave (Bereavement) Bill became law, giving fathers and partners the day-one right to paternity leave when the child’s mother dies. Previously, employees had to be employed for a minimum of 26 weeks to be eligible for paternity leave. Employers also had no legal obligation to give bereaved parents time off. If you are expecting or adopting and your due / placement date is after 6th April 2024 then listen up! Expect changes like: ?? New parents have the choice to either take two non-consecutive periods of one week leave OR a single two-week block ???? Leave can be taken within 52 weeks of the birth / placement ?? Only notice of entitlement needs to be given 15 weeks prior to birth / placement of adoption ??? Ensure paternity leave is requested four weeks ahead of your notice?periods Take note that these changes apply to England, Scotland and Wales ONLY. Sweden offers 480 days of leave at 80% pay, Norway provides up to 49 weeks at full pay, and Iceland offers 12 months of leave with high financial support.
